The Flickering Myth Reaction to the Skyfall trailer

27 May 2012 4:28 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

In the first of a new feature, Flickering Myth’s diverse team of writers chip in with their opinions on the latest releases, trailers and movie news. First up for debate is the Skyfall teaser trailer...

The Skyfall trailer was released earlier this week to a general chorus of positive critical chatter. We’ve already had one opinion piece at Flickering Myth claiming that the trailer gives us “plenty to be excited about”. But Daniel Craig’s Bond is not universally liked and we like to cater to everyone’s tastes. So behold a broad spectrum of flash reactions to the trailer from our writers. There’s something for everyone here, whether you want to bemoan 007’s demise into a Jason Bourne impersonator or excitedly speculate about Ralph Fiennes’ mysterious character, Mallory.

Simon Moore: “That is one dark teaser trailer. Getting some real 80s hard sci-fi vibes for some reason. »

Happy 90th Birthday Christopher Lee!

27 May 2012 3:20 PM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

Sir Christopher Lee was born 90 years ago today, on May 27, 1922 and we want to wish him a very Happy Birthday! Even at the age of 90, he shows no signs of slowing down, with upcoming roles in Frankenweenie and The Hobbit movies. I wanted to take this time and help celebrate Christopher Lee’s birthday by introducing some of our younger readers to his past films, and have included a number of movie trailers to watch.

In recent years, the average moviegoer probably will recognize Christopher Lee as Saruman in The Lord of the Rings films or Count Dooku from the second and third Star Wars prequels. However, he has over 275 credits, including playing a Bond villain in The Man With the Golden Gun and Lord Summerisle in the 1973 cult classic The Wicker Man. He also has multiple Hammer credits, playing characters including Dracula, The Mummy, and Frankenstein’s monster.

Simon Hoggart's week: if only this was the last Eurovision Song Contest

25 May 2012 4:12 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The spray-on kitsch is fairly hard to take, but even harder to take is that the organisers actually take it seriously

✒It's the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday, the 57th. Wouldn't it be wonderful if it was the last? At least for us. BBC1 could put on reruns of Flog It!, or pro-celebrity badminton. The song contest would disappear on to one of those cable channels with audiences so small they can't be measured – Eurosport 3, perhaps.

Because it is so utterly, horribly grim. Acts which would not get a gig on Ladies' Night at the Baku Freemasons appear in front of millions singing like a cement mixer tackling Celine Dion's greatest hits, or, because they are always decades behind, doing punk in Finnish, or there's some preening poltroon in sky-blue vinyl who resembles a rapper as much as I sound like Jose Feliciano.

MGM and 20th Century Fox have announced what is sure to be the ultimate blu-ray collection for James Bond fans, in the form of Bond 50, and unprecedented 23-disc blu-ray set collecting all of the Bond films to date...plus over 100 hours of special features.

The 50th Anniversary is coming up for the James Bond franchise, and of course the studios aren't going to let that pass without something major to give to the fans.  Thus, we have the announcement for Bond 50.  This collection, is absolutely huge.  It's got all 22 current Bond films in HD on blu-ray, and includes a 23rd bonus disc with new special features.  That's a lot of damn films, and simply a massive collection.

Outside of all of that, another thing that should have fans excited is that it this is the first time 9 of these films have been available in high-definition.  The set is scheduled to release on September 25th, »

James Bond Retrospective: Octopussy (1983)

15 May 2012 3:15 PM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

To mark the 50th Anniversary of one of the most successful movie franchises of all time and with filming almost complete on James Bond’s 23rd official outing in Skyfall due for release later this year, I have been tasked with taking a retrospective look at the films that turned author Ian Fleming’s creation into one of the most recognised and iconic characters in film history.

For Octopussy, the thirteenth official James Bond film, 1983 proved to be rather unlucky. After a lengthy court battle with the co-writer of Thunderball, Kevin McClory, Albert R. Broccoli’s Eon Productions had lost the right to use Bond’s nemesis Blofeld and his organisation Spectre in any of their films. McClory had been trying since 1974 to get his own rival Bond film made but due to a lack of financial backing and legal action from United Artists and the Fleming Trustees his project »

By Hank Reineke

As the eagerly anticipated premiere of Skyfall, the twenty-third James Bond film, counts down to its October 2012 release, Boston area fans of Britain’s favorite secret agent are being afforded the rare opportunity to revel in all that has come before. The staff of the Somerville Theater (located on Davis Square in the Boston suburb of Somerville, Massachusetts), are in the midst of celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of Ian Fleming’s super-spy on the big screen in a big way; with an ambitious year long series-encompassing twenty-two film retrospective. The architect of screenings is Ian Judge, the theater’s Director of Programming. Judge has not only been managing the nearly one-hundred year old theater for the past ten years, but he has long shared a history with the venue having grown up only a few blocks away from its gilded entrance. »

Blu-ray Review: Forbidden Zone

Forbidden Zone

Stars: Hervé Villechaize, Susan Tyrrell, Gisele Lindley, Jan Stuart Schwartz, Marie-Pascale Elfman, Joe Spinell | Written and Directed by Richard Elfman

The question is when looking at Forbidden Zone where to start? I guess to say an attack on the senses would be one way to describe it when you first watch it. Putting in the Blu-Ray I will admit I was not prepared for the film and it did take some time to get used to its style. I will admit that my first reaction was that I would not like it, but surprisingly by the end of the film and on the second watch (to listen to the commentary track) any negativity was gone as I was fully in the Forbidden Zone.

James Bond Bosses To Stage Huge 50th Birthday Exhibition

4 May 2012 9:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Movie bosses are to mark the 50th birthday of the James Bond franchise this year by staging the biggest ever exhibition of iconic props from the spy films.

Eon Productions chiefs have released a dazzling array of costumes, gadgets and cars from the 007 movies to go on display in London in the summer.

The famous exhibits include Goldfinger henchman Oddjob's bowler hat, the metal teeth sported by Jaws in two 1970s Bond films, Scaramanga's pistol from The Man With The Golden Gun, 007's spacesuit from Moonraker, and a deck of tarot cards seen in Live and Let Die.

The flick-knife shoes worn by Spectre agent Rosa Klebb in From Russia with Love, a waterproof camera from Thunderball, Halle Berry's orange bikini from Die Another Day, Bond's underwater Lotus car from The Spy Who Loved Me, and Daniel Craig's famous blue swimming trunks will also be on display.

The exhibition will even feature some of Bond's personal effects, including his black American Express card and his passport - which reveals he travels under the false name Arlington Beech. »

James Bond Retrospective: For Your Eyes Only (1981)

Following on from Bond’s previous mission into outer space for Moonraker, which although it was a huge success at the box office provided some of the worst excesses of the series so far preferring a more humorous approach over the serious spy thrills of the early days in the character’s long history. The film had also proved to be a costly exercise requiring co-financing from the French wing of United Artists to cover the budget. Series producer Albert R. Broccoli wisely »

007 Legends: 5 Best & 5 Worst Potential Missions

Coinciding with the 50th Anniversary of the Bond series, anticipation couldn’t be any higher for Daniel Craig’s third turn as the iconic secret agent in the upcoming Skyfall.

Directed by Sam Mendes with a cast that includes Judi Dench, Javier Bardem and Ralph Fiennes, Skyfall features a smorgasbord of respected Oscar talent. It even has the legendary Coen Brothers regular Roger Deakins on cinematography duties, making it clear that this isn’t just any run of the mill Bond film. But while excitement is high for Bond’s 23rd outing on the big screen, the secret agent also has to compete with the London Olympics and the Queens Golden Jubilee for the world’s attention.

As well as the release of Skyfall and a 50th anniversary Blu-ray box set of all 22 Bond films, a celebratory video game titled 007 Legends has also been recently announced. Best described as a »

Maud Adams is unhappy James Bond is going to be seen drinking a beer in new movie 'Skyfall'. The 67-year-old Swedish actress starred opposite Roger Moore in two Bond films, 'The Man with the Golden Gun' and 'Octopussy', and she is unimpressed that current 007 Daniel Craig will be seen supping a Heineken instead of his trademark Vodka Martin cocktail after Heineken USA agreed a deal to be featured in the movie. James Bond Will Help Open The London Summer Olympics?

2 April 2012 1:17 PM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Update: We've been told that this is merely another April Fools' joke that got way out of control. Our sincerest apologies.

The world's greatest secret agent celebrates his 50th anniversary this year. Agent 007 has a brand new movie, Skyfall, coming out in November, but now he has just been assigned a special mission ordered straight from the Queen herself! Literally!

Queen Elizabeth herself asked James Bond actor Daniel Craig and Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours) to create a brand-new short film, titled "The Arrival", featuring Bond being asked to start the 2012 London Summer Olympics. Craig and Boyle were given "unprecedented access to [Buckingham Palace] and its private rooms". The short will be shown on July 27th during BBC's coverage of the games, though it is expected to premiere online before then. The Queen is no stranger to embracing pop culture, having recently been "attacked" by a Dalek from Doctor Who. »
