Ravi Khanna (Amitabh Bachchan) lives happily with his widowed mother, wheelchair-bound sister (Farida Jalal) and younger brother. He suffers from a terminal brain tumor, and has only 6 months to live. In an effort to provide for his family, he takes the responsibility of a murder that he has not committed to collect the ransom money of Rs. 500,000. He leaves a trail for the police to follow and he is convicted. While in prison he gets an attack and the jail authorities take him to the hospital where he undergoes a successful operation. Now, he is a confessed criminal for abduction, ransom and murder, which he himself planted himself. In order to save himself from the death penalty, he runs away from the hospital in search of the real murderer. He gets help from a thief named Michael (Pran). Ravi Khanna is employed with a travel agency, and one rainy night while attending to a customer Surendra Sinha (Rehman), is unable to get a taxi-cab, and ends up getting a ride from Mr. Sinha. Mr. Sinha drops him off at a Pharmacy, and thereafter drives away. Subsequently, it is revealed that Mr. Sinha has been kidnapped and held for ransom. Ravi is called in by the police to provide a statement. Several months later, Ravi gets another visit from another police inspector Khurana and Ravi is told that Mr. Sinha body has been found, and Ravi is now a suspect. This troubles Ravi, and he starts getting sudden and painful headaches. On going through a medical check-up, Ravi is told that he has a brain tumor, and whether operated upon or not, he may not live very long. Ravi has now to accumulate enough wealth so that his mom wheel-chair bound sister, Renu, younger brother Billoo, are adequately looked after. He also has to avoid seeing his sweetheart, Neelu, so that she can forget him and marry someone else. Ravi's method of accumulating wealth for his family, is questionable, and lands him into even more trouble with the law, with no possibility of leaving any wealth for his family.
