After Paul backs the car off of the rising drawbridge, the rear end is smashed, and the trunk lid is flapping up and down. When he drives it down to the bay to dunk it in the water, the trunk lid is securely closed.

After the first time that Crewe hits Bogdanski "below the belt" with the football, the game clock has stopped at 2:29 remaining in the game, after the second time he does it, the clock is at 2:35 remaining and running.

While they are playing the football game, towards the beginning and again as the game is won, they show inmates celebrating in their cells, but reuse the video from the earlier scenes when Unger had booby trapped Crew's jail cell light bulb to explode. The smoke from the earlier fire can be seen filling the far end of the shot in all the scenes.

During the final drive the Mean Machine called time out after 1st and goal and there was 40 seconds on the clock. The next play the running back ran out of bounds and there was 25 seconds left. It's not possible that that play would take 15 seconds.

During the game, various scenes are sunny and overcast between shots, and also at largely varying times of day.

When Crewe comes up behind the center during the first scrimmage to have the ball hiked to him, his chin strap is snapped on the right side; the next shot shows his chin strap snapped on the left side only.

During the fight in the swamp, both Crewe and the other inmate are fully covered in mud, but after a cutaway, Crewe's back is shown and his shirt has a large clear white patch where it looks like it hadn't gotten dirty yet.

When Crewe goes up and over to score the final touchdown he is shown landing with just his upper body and the ball across the goal line. In the next frame from another angle his entire body is across the goal line.

When Crewe hits Bogdanski in the lower regions in the "all curl" play, its first and 10. The sidelines are celebrating, and the scoreboard shows 2nd down with 17 to go, with 2:29 left, though the penalty had not yet been assessed. As the Mean Machine comes to the line for a repeat of the "all curl" play, the announcer calls it "third and 32". After the 2nd "errant pass" from Crewe, another cut to the sidelines shows its still 2nd down and 17, but with 2:34 left in the game.

When Crewe is talking to the team for the first time, they are sitting on the bleachers and from a rear shot, several of them are wearing their helmets. However, a second later a shot from the front shows nobody wearing helmets.

It was explained that Caretaker had stolen the guards' new uniforms, just before his death.

However, the uniforms said "Mean Machine" on them, which was the nickname of the prisoners' team.

Factual errors

Near the end of the game of the Guards vs. the Mean Machine, when the Mean Machine attempts a drop kick on fourth down, the kick actually goes outside the goal posts (as can be confirmed in frame by frame scan), and should have been ruled as no good.

With the score 8-0 guards, the Mean Machine scores a touchdown. Crewe decides to go for a fake instead of kicking the PAT, presumably to tie the score and the play is successful but the result is only 1 point, the same result as a successful PAT would have been.

Melissa warns Paul not to touch her Maserati. The car was sold in the US as a Citroen/Maserati SM, a Citroen with a Maserati engine. The owner would be more likely to refer to it as Maserati.

Richard Kiel hurt his arm during the shoot and can be seen with his arm in a sling in some parts of the football game scenes (his character is supposedly fully fit).

During the fourth quarter of the football game between the guards and inmates, the inmates try a dropkick. The kick clearly goes wide left, missing the points, yet the referees signal a good kick.

When Capt. Kenauer attempts to strike Crewe with a baton as he is kneeling in the swamp, Crewe grabs the baton. As Crewe rises from the swamp while still holding the baton, you can see the baton flex, as clearly it is a rubber prop baton.

During the swamp scene, one of the guards calls out Crew (Reynolds) to have Granville attached to him. When Crewe turns, we see his bottom lip very swollen and a lot of the skin shows to be red. But when Granville is finally attached to Crewe, Crewe doesn't have a swollen lip and the red is barely noticeable.
