Storyline

A Jewish ghetto in central Europe, 1944. By coincidence, Jakob Heym eavesdrops on a German radio broadcast announcing the Soviet Army is making slow by steady progress towards central Europe. In order to keep his companion in misfortune, Mischa, from risking his life for a few potatoes, he tells him what he heard and announces that he is in possession of a radio - in the ghetto a crime punishable by death. It doesn't take long for word of Jakob's secret to spread - suddenly, there is new hope and something to live for - and so Jakob finds himself in the uncomforting position of having to come up with more and more stories. Trivia

It was not easy for Frank Beyer to convince renown actor Erwin Geschonneck to agree to play Kowalski, since Geschonneck would have liked to play Jakob himself. Eventually, Geschonneck was convinced by the argument that the introverted Jakob should be enacted by a more inconspicuous-looking actor. See more »

Quotes

Kowalski: I'm asking you as a friend. What would you invest in?
Jakob Heym: Maybe luxury goods of some kind. They were crazy for them after the last war. David built a house with the profits on the schnapps he sold.
Kowalski: You're right. Do you think we'll have potatoes to make schnapps?
Jakob Heym: Probably not. Everything will be short. You need good instincts.

I think this film was very well done. I was drawn into the plot and characters very quickly. I would reccommend this film to anyone who would enjoy a new outlook on life. I know that is one of the things I got from watching this movie. Jakob was a very charismatic person and I could not wait to find out what would happen to him and his comrades. Though this movie was not very fast paced, there was enough going on that kept me interested during the entire movie.
