James Caan and Alan Arkin mangle San Francisco roads
31 December 2015 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Freebie and the Bean" (1974) had me laughing out loud in places. At other times I was incredulous at the car chases through the streets and the stunts. Some are spectacular.

The plot is secondary, something about nailing a numbers boss, Jack Kruschen. Part of that involves protecting him from being rubbed out by a hit-man or successive hit men. Part of that involves Caan and Arkin, two rogue cops if ever there were any, convincing their superiors, Mike Kellin and Alex Rocco, to let them proceed. Valerie Harper does a terrific turn as Arkin's wife whom he suspects of having an affair.

The cinematography is gorgeous. The weather cooperated with clear days and blue skies against which the skyline and skyscrapers look great.

Caan's comic talents are excellent. In this movie, Arkin is not as good as Caan or as in his other features, in my opinion. The part does not suit his style as well. However, the rapid-fire exchanges between him and Caan work quite well. I don't know why Loretta Swit received such high billing.

There's lots of madcap mayhem in this movie.
