Although the surname Fantozzi is believed to be a Northern Italian last name, the last name is actually of Sicilian origin. The movie was also based on a Northern Italian family and filmed in Northern Italy, adding to the common belief that the name is Northern Italian. The original surname name was Fantozzino but was at one point in time shortened.
