What would you do if three escaped convicts entered your house and refused to leave? What would you do if you could contact the police but your son has been held hostage? What would you do if the convicts made you do acts against your will? This is the living hell that law-abiding citizens, Editor Ashok Roy (Raj Kumar), his wife Deepa (Mala Sinha), his sister Nisha (Parveen Babi) and his son Raju find themselves in. They are stuck at home with three murderers Himmat (Sunil Dutt), Dilavar (Danny) and Ajit (Ranjit) who have robbed a bank and escaped. While they wait for their counterpart to deliver the loot they put these innocent people through tremendous terror. Will Ashok be able to save his family? Will he be able to get rid of the criminals? Produced & Directed by Raj Tilak, this multi starer has gripping moments and a captivating plot.
36 Ghante is a movie that will remain etched in my memory as one of the few convincing movies that I have seen. Convincing in the sense that almost each and every situation and dialogue is presented in the most natural way, the way a viewer expects it to be in a similar real life situation. Its greatness is not dependent upon the plot of the movie, rather on the treatment it receives. For example, when dead tired of the tyranny of the hostage-takers, the editor's son boasts childishly that he will shoot them with his toy pistol, the father warns, "the guns in the criminal's hands are real ones." Even the minute details are treated with dainty sumptuousness, such as the sequence related to the kidnapping of the Coca Cola delivery truck. It also shows a glimpse of the 70s' well-off families' everyday life. Rajkumar gives a most striking performance as the wise, cool-minded head of a family.
If this movie is not rated 10/10 then no other movie deserves 10/10 it is as simple as that. 36 Ghante is a flawless movie based on real life situation of a happy family. 3 convicts keep the family as their captive by forcibly entering the house, Sunil Dutt, Danny & Ranjit play their roles superbly. Raaj Kumar's performance is simply outstanding in the movie as a family head. Danny's restless monkey like antics were the very best in the movie, I think he equals Amjad Khan in Sholay, he really looked an eerie monkey like dangerous criminal. 36 Ghante is a must watch for any cinema lover, a masterpiece. Raaj Tilak who has some ordinary movies to his credit stroked gold with this superb movie, all the cast of the movie played perfectly to the simple story line.
