RUNS THE GAMUT FROM SAD TO UPSETTING, BUT TRULY EXCELLENT!!
Jan-Michael Vincent was young, gorgeous and, actually... a WORTHY talent when he earned the role of "Buster" here and the still little known Joan Goodfellow who played "Billie", complemented each other and made this movie WORK and work beautifully! Both were handed remarkable roles and did them, the movie and audiences who are lucky enough to see this movie... justice.
This story takes place in a small country town in the 1940's or 1950's where a popular high school jock (Vincent) and a sexually free, backwoods girl (who everybody believes is "backwards") somehow manage to connect and UNDERSTAND and NEED each other; but his cold, savage, ugly know-it-all high school buddies KNOW BETTER and...
I just realized that I don't think I should misrepresent this movie by saying that IT runs the gamut... because it was so excellent that what really happened was it ran ME through the gamut of emotional extremes while watching it. I experienced every emotion from curiosity, disgust, anger, sadness, tenderness, compassion, fear and impassioned hatred while watching this movie. It was so beautifully written & acted and so masterfully directed that you gradually become so GRIPPED within the story that you don't want to leave your seat. I wish we had VCR's and DVD players back in 1974 when I first saw this movie -- I would have taped it and kept it forever!!
You will also see a young Robert Englund a number of years prior to his "Freddy Kruger/Nightmare On Elm Street" fame, as one of Vincent's high school buddies.
There isn't a person alive who walks away unaffected by "Buster & Billie". It's simply not possible.
