Storyline

A multi-volumed documentary mini-series, "The World at War" covers the entire history of World War II from the causes of the 1920s to the aftermath of the Cold War in the 1950s. Emphasis is also placed on several inside story episodes, where events are covered which occurred inside Germany and Japan such as resistance to Hitler, life in general under a dictatorial regime, and particular emphasis is focused on the Jewish Holocaust. Trivia

Although the series claims that the United States was neutral until the attack on its naval base at Pearl Harbor, this was no longer true after the start of Lend Lease in March 1941. While not officially at war with the Axis, the US was enabling the British Empire and the Soviet Union to continue fighting. The US had also frozen all Japanese assets and imposed an economic blockade against Japan in the summer of 1941. See more »

The most authoritative Second World War documentary series
4 September 1998 | by (Toronto, Canada) – See all my reviews

Certainly any others I have seen pale in comparison. The series gives balanced coverage to all theatres of operation. No one country is given undue credit for the Allied victory. Laurence Olivier brings great weight and dignity to his role as narrator.
