'Les Miserables': Five new clips from the musical -- Video

1 December 2012 8:15 AM, PST | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

In a sign of extreme confidence after preview screenings sent its Oscar potential skyrocketing, the makers of Les Miserables have released five extended clips from the upcoming musical, which is sure to boost enthusiasm among moviegoers eager for its Christmas Day debut.

In an earlier trailer, we’ve already heard much of Anne Hathaway’s crushing rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream,” a number that is largely responsible making her the frontrunner for Best Support Actress. But these new clips tend not to be the big hit solos.

Instead, they are mostly ensemble numbers, emphasizing the musical dialogue between characters. »

Check Out These Production Images From ‘The Bodyguard’ – Opens In London Next Week!

There is just over a week to go until the opening of perhaps one of the most anticipated musicals of the year. Les Misérables first screenings – Twitter predicts a best picture Oscar

26 November 2012 5:53 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Director Tom Hooper's adaptation of the musical gets a warm reception from social media users at the first screenings

The first cut of Les Misérables, a new screen adaptation of the stage musical from The King's Speech director Tom Hooper, debuted over the weekend at a variety of Us venues in special screenings for critics, punters and – most crucially perhaps – awards voters.

The Daily Beast was quick to label it the new front-runner for the best picture Oscar, with critic Marlow Stern saying:

Hooper's film is one of the most joyous, epic experiences you'll have in a cinema this year. It's vaulted past other contenders like Lincoln, Argo, and Silver Linings Playbook in the Best Picture race, and proves that the director's Oscar-winning previous effort, The King's Speech, was no fluke.

The editor of awards site In Contention was similarly effusive.

Hathaway wins. God. I wept. Film's a triumph. »

Blu-ray Review: ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ Still Reflects Back to Us

12 November 2012 9:00 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Relate the now iconic term “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” and most likely a off-tune rendering of the famous rock song by U2 will follow. But the title was originally expressed in director John Schlesinger’s groundbreaking film of 1971, “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” recently released on Blu-ray through The Criterion Collection.

Blu-ray Rating: 4.5/5.0

The film has notoriety because it featured the first same-sex kiss between men in movie history (Peter Finch and Murray Head), but put aside that then-shocking expression and there is a psychologically complex film about unresolved relationship issues and identity. The drama is exquisitely cast, set against a post-Swingin’ 1960s London, when it seemed like the whole culture was waking up with a hangover from all that social change. Peter Finch, best known for his final role in 1976 of the mad news anchorman in “Network,” anchors this film with a passionate communication of middle age in both progress and regress. »

Jesus Christ Superstar: New rock twist on 40-year-old show favorite enlightens a new generation to this fantastic musical

Tim Rice and Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber are Back, with Laurence Connors rock restored remake of the original 1971 Broadway hit!

I had the honor of going to see this production courtesy of showfilmfirst. And boy was I glad I did!

From the off you know this isn’t going to be your usual Jesus Christ Superstar as Judas (Tim Minchin) blasts out the opening song with heavy guitar solos and big drum intros.

The large screen at the back of the stage is the focal point of the action and is used in such a fantastic manner. Showcasing the occupy London movement, introducing a newsreel, Video reporting and even a fantastic, bordering on cheesy, poke at modern reality TV in a TV style vote off. This was definitely a crowd favorite as it starred British Former Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles.

Your next box set: Mr Show with Bob and David

13 September 2012 4:06 PM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

This freeform sketch show flipped from smart to silly and back again – and featured the likes of Jack Black when he was young and fearless

In 1995, after HBO had a hit with a Canadian sketch show called Kids in the Hall, it decided to try something similar with cheaper local La comedy talent. Co-created by Bob Odenkirk (Breaking Bad's Saul) and David Cross (Arrested Development's Tobias), Mr Show with Bob and David assembled a bunch of performers and writers so desperate that they would try anything, and for very little money. In fact, Cross later revealed that he was so poor during the show's production that he survived on food from the on-set catering.

Often compared to Monty Python in spirit, the show took a freeform approach, letting sketches run into each other and flipping from smart to silly and back again. It tapped into a growing appetite »

One Man, Two Guvnors to tour Australia

10 September 2012 6:11 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The hit National Theatre production is to visit major festivals in Asia and New Zealand, before taking up residency as part of Cate Blanchett's final season as co-artistic director of Sydney Theatre Company

The National Theatre's smash hit One Man, Two Guvnors will swap Brighton pier for Bondi beach when it embarks on a tour of Australia and east Asia next year.

Having just finished a successful five months on Broadway, Nicholas Hytner's production will visit major festivals in Hong Kong, Adelaide and Auckland from February, before playing six-week runs in each of Australia's two cultural capitals, Sydney and Melbourne. The transfer might require playwright Richard Bean to tinker with the script a second time, to smooth some of the particularly British terminology for a new audience.

With James Corden due to film his latest self-penned BBC sitcom, The Wrong Man, in early 2013, the cast will be led by Owain Arthur. »

Ricky Martin isn't the only sexy stud to come to us via the pop group Menudo - we can thank our lucky stars we also get the stunning, studly Cesar Abreu. Currently dancing for the Metropolitan Opera, Cesar has also, unsurprisingly, been featured many times in the annual stripfest Broadway Bares.

25 Greatest Film Musicals Of All Time

4 September 2012 1:22 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Much like the old nursery rhyme about the little girl who had a little curl right in the middle of her forehead, when a movie musical is good, it is very, very good. But when it is bad, it is horrid. Sgt. Pepper immediately springs to mind in the latter category, of course. There was also Kismet, which found itself unfortunately produced at the extreme tail-end of the Golden Age of the movie musical. South Pacific, Oklahoma! and Carousel were valiant efforts that tended to slack off midway through, and Godspell was the unwilling victim of poor direction. And though Jesus Christ Superstar retains its status as a cult hit, it wasn’t difficult to scope out the problems in transferring the stage show to celluloid, plus let’s not get started on the tragic messes that were A Little Night Music, Hello, Dolly!, Mame or A Chorus Line.
