The Old Rugged Johnny
23 June 2004 | by (Southport N W England) – See all my reviews

I saw this film at the height of my teenage decision to become part of the Christian Church. It did the rounds in youth gatherings mainly to counteract the Superstar film which a lot of regular Christians thought was blasphemous.

From what I remember there are things about the film which are very stupidly sentimental , but almost to be expected from the inspiring milieu of Country and Western religion. I didn't like floating roses on garden ponds as the totally blond Jesus addressed Nicodemus under a moon straight from a cowboy picture...There were no roses like that in Christ's time.I found a scene where Jesus after enjoying a game with a crowd of children went and washed his dirtied robes in the sea a piece of really badly digested symbolism.

Nothing has stayed in my head about crucial scenes.I have the rasping voice of Mr Cash only because people played the soundtrack album incessantly, as one did in those days of puberty.

I remember that Elfstrom in a poll was awarded a rather comic accolade as the most uninteresting man ever to portray Jesus Christ.

Significantly there is no sign of Jesus' Mother and I remember an awful rendition of "Lord Is It I" sung by the Disciples.

To end, I think It's an incredibly bad picture-and they were hoping to convert people.Cash never rang true with me religiously anyway and I'm only grateful that we didn't have Jimmy Carter or Glenn Campbell as our hosts in this miasma.

Very poor 3/10
