'Exorcist' Copyright Battle Dismissed

9 December 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

The Exorcist director William Friedkin and author William Peter Blatty have lost their court battle to prevent movie executives at Warner Brothers from remaking the 1973 horror classic. Friedkin and Blatty claimed in their 2001 suit that they owned the copyright to the 2000 re-release, which featured 11 minutes of unseen footage, and that Warner Brothers bosses had no right to distribute the film. But a federal court dismissed the copyright case, with US District Court Judge Lourdes Baird claiming Friedkin and Blatty's interpretation of the Copyright Act "turned the statute on its head." Baird found that Friedkin had no copyright interest in either version of the film and that Warner Brothers and Blatty were co owners of the copyrights to both films and that Blatty had granted Warners the exclusive right to remake the film. Friedkin plans to appeal the decision. »

'Exorcist' Lawsuit Given the Green Light

27 November 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

The Exorcist director William Friedkin and writer William Peter Blatty have been given permission to continue their lawsuit against AOL Time Warner in relation to millions of dollars of unpaid revenue from a recent re-release of the horror classic. The pair allege Warner Brothers, Turner Network Television and Turner Broadcasting System have all colluded to keep hidden the real value of proceeds from a highly profitable re-packaging of the exorcism flick in 2000. On Friday an American Superior Court Judge denied a motion by Warner Brothers to throw out the lawsuit. Blatty and Friedkin allege they received no compensation for their revisions of the film, despite contracts signed in 1971 that gave Blatty from 28 percent to 39 percent of net profits, and Friedkin net profits of 10 percent. The pair are seeking unspecified damages, but allege the re-release has earned at least $110 million. »

Ryan Takes On The Devil In Exorcist Prequel

24 January 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Ryan Phillippe is to don clerical garb to star in the as-yet untitled Exorcist prequel. The young actor admits he's thrilled to be offered the role alongside Liam Neeson - as an idealistic priest forced to come face-to-face with the devil - and is particularly happy to be working with director John Frankenheimer. He says, "I remember being a kid and watching Frankenheimer's The Manchurian Candidate and being affected by the direction. It was the first movie that really opened up my eyes to direction." »
