Storyline

A neurotic housewife named Sally and her business exec husband move into Sally's family house, a spooky two story Victorian mansion. When Sally starts the redecorating along with her pompous decorator she comes across a locked room in the house. After arguing with the handyman who insists she should leave the room locked, she finally gets the key. But once she opens her father's old study and has the bricks from the fireplace removed, strange things begin to happen. Sally begins to see small creatures everywhere, but no one will believe her. Her husband dismisses her as neurotic and her friend thinks Sally may be losing her mind. But things take a deadly serious turn when the decorator trips at the top of the stairs and falls to his death. Sally sees a rope lying across the place where he tripped, but when she picks it up to take it, a horrifying little creature pulls it from her grasp. Is she crazy? Or has Sally released demons in the house, demons her father summoned? Written by Philip Berry <tr808@home.com>

Trivia

The idea of the creatures coming out of an ash clean-out pit came from the Spanish house that Nigel McKeand was living in at the time; it had an old fireplace at the rear with a deep clean-out pit, bolted at the rear. It was so deep, creepy and dark nobody ever wanted the job of cleaning it out. See more »

Goofs

(at around 1h 5 mins) When the creatures cut the electric cable and plunge the house into darkness, when Joan is outside trying to get back into the house after looking at the fuse box, it's daylight out - or at least twilight. However, just a few moments earlier, when she was in the bedroom with Sally and looked out the window, it was very dark outside, clearly night time. At the same time that this action is happening, Alex is driving back to the house with Mr. Harris, and it's clearly night. But as Joan is circling the house to get in, you can see sunlight casting shadows on the house and on the ground behind her. See more »

Quotes

Creatures: [closing lines] When will they come? When will they come? When will they come and set us free?
Sally Farnham: Of course they will come. You know they will.
Creatures: But when? When? When?
Sally Farnham: Soon. Very soon. We've lots of time. Lots of time. All the time in the world.
Creatures: All the time in the world . Time. Time. Time to set us free again.
Sally Farnham: All the time in the world.
Creatures: To set us free. Set us free. Set us free in the world. Free. Free. Free in the world. Set us free!

Unique

This is one of those little films that lends itself to legendary status, because it is almost impossible to see nowadays. With a great deal of effort and patience, one can find a copy....but it sure isn't easy. So many of us remember seeing it when it aired...I was all but six or seven and remembered only these gnome-like creatures. Recently I was able to see it again....and started to remember a lot more of it. The film is pretty atmospheric as it chronicles the slow then fast menacing of Sally Farnham by pint-sized demons with conical shaped heads. Sally and her husband recently moved into this large house and forsaking the advice of carpenter William Demarest, Sally opens a fireplace which had been sealed over twenty-five years ago. These creatures lived in the fireplace and now they want Sally...to join them. Kim Darby does a good job playing Sally as she slowly descends into madness...as well as other destinations. Forget all the talk about it being only good for a television movie...this is a good movie period. It has loads of atmosphere and suspense, albeit a bit shallow in the area of plot.
