Storyline

After a shoot-out kills five FBI agents in Kansas City the Bureau target John Dillinger as one of the men to hunt down. Waiting for him to break Federal law they sort out several other mobsters, while Dillinger's bank robbing exploits make him something of a folk hero. Escaping from jail he finds Pretty Boy Floyd and Baby Face Nelson have joined the gang and pretty soon he is Public Enemy Number One. Now the G-men really are after him. Did You Know?

Trivia

Ben Johnson (Melvin Purvis) was 54 when shooting this film, the real Purvis died at the age of 56. This is almost twice the age the real Purvis was when John Dillinger was killed - 30 years old. See more »

Goofs

Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Some of the peripheral male actors in the film do not have their hair cut in 1930s fashion (close cropped on on the sides and back and short or fully cut sideburns). One instance is with the gray-haired man helping to escort John Dillinger into the Crown Point Jail. He has long sideburns. See more »

Quotes

[Pretty Boy Floyd has been hiding with a farm family when he sees the FBI pull up]
Farm woman: Do you need a Bible?
Pretty Boy Floyd: [shakes his head ruefully] I admit, I have sinned; I have been a sinner, but I enjoyed it. I have killed men, but the dirty sons-of-bitches deserved it. The way I figure it, it's too late for no Bible. Thanks just the same, Ma'am.
