Yes, it is based on the real-life spree killer Charles Starkweather and his 14-year-old ex-girlfriend Caril Ann Fugate. He began his killing spree January 21, 1958 in Lincoln, Nebraska. When it ended eight days later in Douglas, Wyoming eleven people were dead. Starkweather was executed by electric chair and Fugate was declared guilty of aiding and abetting and given a life sentence, but served 18 years before being released. The star witness against her was Starkweather himself, whose statements were inconsistent and contradictory. Fugate claimed that despite opportunities to run away, she did not because Starkweather told her he held her family hostage and would kill them, if she tried. She maintained her innocence throughout her entire life.

It is never revealed whether they were shot or not. Although, in real life both of them were shot and stabbed multiple times. The woman was brutally raped, as well.
