“A Zinging Mix of Naturalism and Edge”: Jessica Oreck’s The Vanquishing of the Witch Baba Yaga

15 October 2014 7:26 AM, PDT | Filmmaker Magazine - Blog | See recent Filmmaker Magazine news »

With Jessica Oreck’s The Vanquishing of the Witch Baba Yaga opening today at MoMA in New York for a week-long run, we are rerunning Howard Feinstein’s review from the New Directors New Films festival. Running the length of this labor-intensive doc about man’s late-developing historical estrangement from nature are excellent hand-painted animated panels depicting a composite Slavic fairy tale about displaced tween siblings Ivan and Alona who have, out of desperation, taken refuge in a forest they had learned to fear as small children. Residing there is the evil witch Baba Yaga, whose house is built on chicken legs and […] »

How Universal Created a Living Trailer for ‘Dracula Untold’ at its Theme Parks

3 October 2014 11:05 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Universal’s marketing team had a challenge when coming up with their campaign for “Dracula Untold,” the studio’s latest tale of Vlad the Impaler who becomes the iconic blood sucking vampire.

The film, which Legendary Entertainment helped co-finance, revolves around the origins of the character and his love for his family, and stars a younger Vlad, played by Luke Evans, who wears armor rather than a cape. The film also spends less time in a dark, dreary castle and more time on a battlefield with Turkish armies. There are still bats, however. Lots of bats.

With Halloween Horror Nights, Universal found itself with the opportunity to turn to its theme parks to bring the film to life with a maze that showcases the film’s setpieces and introduces them to moviegoers who may not have known about the new angle producers are taking on the classic monster.

Dracula Untold, Dracula undying, Dracula overdone?

2 October 2014 6:20 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Dracula Untold bites the UK box office this week, but are we reaching vampire overload, James wonders...

Drac is back (in, erm, black, but we're not going to crank AC/DC because it's cliché, it's anachronistic in this medieval setting and it might be mistaken as a reference to Iron Man). If you go to your local cinema this weekend you can see Dracula Untold which has Luke Evans vamping it up as the latest incarnation of the most infamous bloodsucker in cultural history.

Once the movie has been seen the title should be changed to 'Dracula Told' because then it won't be a story 'Untold' but, ah, I digress. The important thing to know is that audiences are going to get to enjoy a new movie expanding the Dracula mythos and this one has a lot to offer cinemagoers getting into the horror mindset in the Halloween month.

Beetlemania and Beyond: Jessica Oreck

29 September 2014 7:00 AM, PDT | Keyframe | See recent Keyframe news »

Jessica Oreck's latest film, The Vanquishing of the Witch Baba Yaga is a heady confluence of avant-garde collage, documentary portraiture, essayistic reflection and hand-drawn classical animation. Baba Yaga is a film about how myth and history are passed down and inherited, and about how, as in the Godard story, they are shared among families, communities and cultures. >> - Calum Marsh »

Jordan M. Smith’s Top 10 Best Docs of 2014 So Far

28 July 2014 10:30 AM, PDT | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

Thanks to the increase in access to small scale non-fiction films through the barrage of streaming services viewers now have access to – Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime, Mubi, Vudu, etc – people are watching more documentaries than ever before. You can literally turn on any web ready device of your choosing and be watching any number of top quality docs within a number of seconds. It’s nothing short of incredible. But, with ease of access comes an over saturation of content used to fill in the curatorial gaps. For every Marwencol, Senna, Gimme Shelter or The Act of Killing, there are heaps of ordures cinéma clogging up precious bandwidth. And let’s not forget, cinemas themselves are enjoying a renewed trust in the non-fiction form, exhibiting over 100 documentaries on the silver screen last year and banking over $50 Million at the box office in the process, not including the hundreds of »

2014 Hot Docs Film Festival Interview: Director Jessica Oreck (The Vanquishing of the Witch Baba Yaga)

28 July 2014 10:00 AM, PDT | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

Meeting up with director Jessica Oreck at this year’s Hot Docs Film Festival in the lobby of a hotel in the museum district of Toronto just an hour before she hopped on yet another plane as part of her current festival tour took a bit of persistence, not because the brilliant young filmmaker was being actively evasive, but that her tendency to cater to her introverted nature often keeps her from actively promoting her breathtakingly beautiful works of art. This fact might explain why Oreck’s latest film, The Vanquishing of the Witch Baba, still sadly lacks a domestic distributor, though, thankfully, she did finally agree to meet with me to discuss her latest film which delves into a kaleidoscope of ideas pertaining to Eastern European myth and the woodlands in which the rural population continue to live their lives as if frozen in a timeless fairy tale. 23 July 2014 7:15 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Spider One, the infamous founder of Powerman 5000, has directed his first music video. It's for "Kiss Me Kill Me" by the Los Angeles-based band Knee High Fox, and you can see it right here.

Spider One is the brother of rock star/director Rob Zombie, and with this video he tries his hand at the horror genre, where Zombie has done most of his work. The video for "Kiss Me Kill Me" stars Christine Connolly, who fronts the band.

Additionally, Simon Nagel plays bass, Matt Hankle is the drummer, and Neal Tiemann plays guitar for Knee High Fox. Although this is his first directorial attempt, Spider One previously produced the show "Death Valley" for MTV.

Enjoy the video in its entirety below with the gorgeous Ms. Connolly, clad in a cheerleader's outfit, being terrorized by a number of psycho killers. It's a fun, three-minute revenge-fueled romp. And for more, »

Luke Evans Goes To The Dark Side In First Dracula Untold Trailer

24 June 2014 9:07 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

You think you know the story of Dracula, the blood-sucking Prince of Darkness himself? Think again! If you thought that the Twilight saga, The CW’s The Vampire Diaries, HBO’s True Blood and NBC’s Dracula had successfully squeezed all the life from Hollywood’s recent vampire craze… you’re probably right. But that’s not about to stop Universal Pictures from trying to sell you yet another vampire flick this fall with Dracula Untold.

The first trailer for the epic medieval fantasy paints Dracula as the valiant Vlad Tepes (Luke Evans), who makes a deal with the Devil in order to protect his young son from invading Turks. It’s interesting that a character so traditionally vilified will be first seen as a hero in Dracula Untold – but hey, if it worked for Maleficent, who’s saying it won’t work this time around?
