In the Madeira Island, the mute Countess Irina Karlstein is the last descendant of the evil Karlstein vampire family. She lives with her also mute servant and seems to be nymphomaniac, seeking for sex most of the time without satisfaction. Irina likes oral sex with men and women to suck off not only semen, but apparently also blood, killing her male and female lovers. Written by

Not Franco's finest, but fans of the Eurosleaze master may enjoy it
First off, those expecting a horror flick, look elsewhere. Even by the already loose standards of Jess Franco, this is purely a sex flick. If there wasn't the dialog to inform us the lead character is a vampire, there'd be no confusing this for a fright film. However, if you enjoy the stylish softcore erotica that came from Europe at the time or are a fan of Franco (and know somewhat what to expect from the man), you may enjoy "Female Vampire". It was independently financed by Franco, so its nowhere near as sleek as his best work (like "Vampyros Lesbos" and "Venus In Furs"). The camera-work is often out of focus (if occasionally gorgeous), the scenes tend to ramble on and the editing is often rather sloppy. Franco's pacing is even more slow than usual, which will turn off those looking for a lightning-paced horror film.
However, this is still reasonably watchable. For one, Lina Romay is absolutely gorgeous, and while she doesn't have much to work with script wise, she radiates with natural charisma. No wonder she became a cult favorite, as this was the film that catapulted her to legend status. If she wasn't in the film, it wouldn't be half as good. The other source of entertainment is the dialog and plot. Its dubbed and daffy, with plenty of unintentionally hilarious lines and explanations. Franco's performance is a real scene stealer, just as it was with "The Diabolical Dr. Z". Also, despite the rather shoddy quality that was absent from Franco's more polished features, the film still succeeds as erotica. "Female Vampire" won't appeal to all tastes, but if you know what you're in for (lots of sex, little horror), this isn't a bad choice. (6/10)
