Daytime Soaps Enjoy a New Surge in Popularity

9 April 2014 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The soap bubble that was supposed to burst is still very much intact.

A couple of years after “All My Children” and “One Life to Live” brought to five the number of daytime dramas axed by the networks over a five-year stretch, the genre is flourishing.

Ratings are up at the four remaining soaps — “The Young and the Restless” and “The Bold and the Beautiful” on CBS, “General Hospital” on ABC and “Days of Our Lives” on NBC — and, in this DVR era, any kind of gain is cause for celebration.

One reason for the increases could be the simple fact that there are fewer shows to compete for the pool of fans. Today’s soaps live alongside game and talkshows such as CBS’ “Let’s Make a Deal” and ABC’s “The Chew,” and a bigger variety of programming for viewers to choose from seems to be helping all the networks. »

The Amityville Flies Swarm Around Young Star McKenna Grace

Casting news for Dimension's brand new take on an enduring horror franchise, simply titled Amityville, has been coming at us hot and heavy in recent weeks, and today another actress has signed on to get haunted. Read on!

Per Bloody Disgusting, "The Young and the Restless" star McKenna Grace is the latest to knock on Amityville's door, being cast to play the youngest daughter of Jennifer Jason Leigh's character.

Leigh stars as lead character Joan, a single mother who moves her three kids into the Amityville house, which of course has a very dark history. Disney star Bella Throne is also on board, and last we heard, Cameron Monaghan was in final negotiations to join the fright flick.

Maniac remake director Franck Khalfoun will direct.

Dimension had planned on reigniting the popular horror franchise using a found-footage angle, but that idea has been dropped as the format appears »

You decide: Will 'Days of Our Lives' repeat as Daytime Emmy champ?

"Days of Our Lives" pulled off a shocking upset in 2013, winning Best Drama Series for the first time in 35 years. Can it win consecutive prizes for the first time in its history? That's not the only drama brewing in this year's race. Cancelled by the ABC network in 2011, "All My Children" and "One Life to Live" are back to compete for their 2013 online revivals. If either is nominated for Best Drama Series, it will become the first online program ever nominated in that category, breaking new ground in daytime the way "House of Cards" broke ground at last year's Primetime Emmys. -Break- Daytime Emmys: Pre-nominations shower 'General Hospital' and 'Young and Restless,' shun online soaps But if the acting pre-nominations are any indication, it might be hard to get past "General Hospital" and "The Young and the Restless," which earned 19 citations apiece »

Daytime Emmy pre-nominations shower 'General Hospital' and 'Young and Restless,' shun online soaps

3 March 2014 2:10 PM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

"General Hospital" and "The Young and the Restless" dominated the Daytime Emmy acting pre-nominations with 19 citations apiece. "Days of Our Lives" follows with 14. "The Bold and the Beautiful" has nine. The two embattled online soaps, "All My Children" and "One Life to Live," were mostly disregarded; two actors from each show were recognized in the younger acting categories (for performers under 26), but both shows were shut out of the lead and supporting races. The longlists were assembled by panels of peer judges, who watched sample performances from all entrants in each category before narrowing it down to their 10 favorites. (Because of ties, there are 12 pre-nominees for Lead Actress and 13 for Supporting Actor.) The pre-nominees now advance to the blue-ribbon round, where panels will determine the final nominees, to be announced on May 1. Best Lead Actress Sharon Case, "T »
