"Death Smiles On A Murderer" is a bizarre sort of film that combines romantic and sexual entanglement between a beautiful woman and a married couple (she seduces both partners), and an Edgar Allan Poe-ish tale of murder and vengeance. The result is uneven and flawed, but that isn't always a detriment, and what we have in this film is more of a nightmarish or dreamlike qulaity than a "bad" movie. Holding center stage, however, is the superb music by composer Berto Pisano. Lyrical themes and vocals form an effective counterpoint to the sinister goings on, and in the more obviously creepy musical passages there is a deliberate pacing that works marvellously to reinforce this dreamlike (or nightmarish) quality. The music really pulls the film together. The story (set in the early 1900s) receives a very "now" sound (for 1972!): electronic instruments, organ, timpani, etc. The result is at once beautiful, yet sinister...an apt description for "Death Smiles On A Murderer".............................
