According to Burstyn's autobiography "Lessons in Becoming Myself", Burstyn and Julia Anne Robinson fell off the back of the golf cart in the Miss America scene when Bruce Dern took off too fast. Robinson hit her head and spent a few days in the hospital as a result.
The name "Marvin Gardens" is derived from Margate City and Ventnor City NJ, and is a housing area in Margate City, Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States, located two miles south of Atlantic City. Marven Gardens is famous as a yellow property on the original version of the Monopoly game board, although the game misspelled the name as "Marvin Garden." It is the only property on the Monopoly board that is not located within Atlantic City.
Filmed in the once popular Marlborough-Blenhim hotel, yet by 1972 the hotel had fallen on hard times like most of Atlantic City. The hotel continued operating until 1978 when it was bought by Park Place Entertainment. Despite protests, the hotel was demolished in 1979, and replaced with Bally's Park Place Casino.
During the meeting with the Japanese businessmen, David Staebler (Jack Nicholson) refers to an experiment where a woman cohabitated with a dolphin in isolation for a couple of months. This is perhaps a reference to the 1965 Dolphin Point Laboratory experiment run by Dr. John C Lilly on St. Thomas Island. The name of the woman who volunteered to participate in the experiment is Margaret Howe, and she was twenty-three-years-old at the time of the experiment.
