In 2015, Subkultur Entertainment started a crowdfunding campaign via Kickstarter to restore the film which was successful. During the restoration it was discovered that the soundtrack was longer than the film itself. This resulted in raiding the vaults at the production company Lisa Film. There, a film reel was discovered which contained scenes cut to obtain a rating from the FSK. In the end, the original director's cut was restored in 4K resolution. See more »

Detailed account of bank holdup, hostages taken and escape
26 January 2017 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Bloody Friday" (1972) is what I call a 70s-style noir, listed by John Grant as a noir. It can also be classed as a German poliziotesscho.

Noirs in the 60s I call "late" noirs. Those in the 80s and after are neo-noirs. Many of the 70s noirs share a style and content more or less more jarring, brash, violent, bloody, hectic and action-oriented than most noirs. They distinguish themselves from action films and become noirs by elaborating the psychology and philosophy of the characters as well as class and social factors. Where they come up short as noirs is often in the cinematography. As compared with earlier and later noirs, they don't go out of their way to use shadows or variations in color.

"Bloody Friday" is an above-par movie in this 70s vein because it has both realistic action and momentum but also extended development of the interactions among the bank robbers and their hostages. This creates realism and surprise as the characters are not stereotyped, even if the general plot outline of a bank robbery, getaway and police pursuit is not uncommon.

This movie has some graphic special effects that are bloody. Plus, there is a car chase sequence with remarkable stunt work in which a man falls out of a speeding car. The actors bring to life the varied characters, even when their on screen time is limited.

There is some reluctance in some reviews to admit its quality. Some downplay it as exploitation. But the IMDb rating of 6.7 is on target, suggesting a high average film.
