Trivia

The film Godfrey Cambridge is watching on his TV when attacked by the Blob is The Blob (1958). The audio-only tracks are from the film within the film, Dementia (1955), aka "Daughter of Horror", from which stock footage is used in the theater sequences in "The Blob". See more »

Goofs

When Lisa supposedly drives at top speed in a panic through the town in her truck, you can see cars traveling on an overpass behind her truck at twice the speed she is, indicating the filmmakers simply filmed her driving normally and then sped the film up. See more »

Far out Blob, man!
16 July 2001 | by (Haddonfield, IL) – See all my reviews

I don't know why more people don't love this film. I've been watching it ever since I was a kid and they used to show it on TV like, every other day. Nobody was more happy than I was when it came out on DVD and now it can be eternally enjoyed for the masterpiece of campy horror that it is.

Directed by Larry Hagman of "Dallas" and "I Dream of Jeannie", this movie tosses us cameos left and right, from Cindy Williams (sans Penny Marshall) to Dick Van Patten (!) to the "xian" music artist Randy Stonehill (who plays a hippie who smokes dope in a storm drain with Cindy and sings a groovy song about cocaine).

For the uninitiated, the ground-breaking concept is this: a piece of the blob resurfaces in Chester (Godfrey Cambridge)'s freezer, brought home from an expedition to the arctic where he helped lay a pipeline. If you remember, the arctic is where the original blob was dumped after it threatened a small diner in the 1958 film. Well, apparently the world has forgotten all about that "weird amoeba from outer space that almost engulfed the planet" incident, and Godfrey brings the mysterious frozen "sample" home to analyze it in the lab (where all pipeline construction workers always end up, of course).

The blob thaws of course, and carnage ensues, beginning with a fly and a small kitten. Then it gets bigger and bigger...well, you understand.

The real goods here are in the goofy comedy elements of the film. It's never a dull moment, not when Chester digs into his tackle box to find a case of beer, not when Lisa and Bobby repeatedly run afoul of Ed Fazio, and not when the blob attacks such random characters as a hippie paying a snobbish barber $400 for a haircut and a big bald naked guy in the bathtub.

The groovy 70s feel is far out, and the acting ranges from passable (Lisa and Bobby are geniuinely sweet together) to abominable (the Sheriff barks the same two commands over and over in the film's climax). There isn't much in the way of actual horror, although I always find the image of the blob crawling up Marianne's ankles in the beginning of the film to be genuinely disturbing. I think it's the weird fingerlike tendrils that shoot out of it. Eeech.

Bad movie afficianados like myself should be heralding this movie's virtues. Is anybody with me?
