A businessman who flew in from Los Angeles (the time it takes to fly from L.A. to S.F. is the source of the title) for a convention meets a woman at the convention center and agrees to join her on her houseboat in nearby Sausalito. They get into an argument and he winds up striking her on the head and fleeing. The woman's boyfriend gets home, gets into an argument with her and again bashes her on the head, killing her. The businessman is the prime suspect in the murder because he was seen arriving at and then fleeing the crime scene.

Grand theft cobra venom? That is what seems to be the charge, along with murder, when a robbery attempt of an Asian ship goes wrong and leads to a wild gunfight. A longshoreman is killed and another one is wounded, but steals his assailant's gun, kills him and makes off with a large shipment box supposedly full of cobra venom to be used in research. The wounded man goes into hiding on the docks with the gun and the case, believing he has actually stolen a shipment of much greater value. He meets secretly with a priest and refuses to turn himself in. Two "Gunsmoke" writers teamed on this modern-day Western set at a rodeo in San Francisco's Cow Palace. A bronc rider dies in what appears to be an accident. A rodeo clown looks around the scene after the police leave and discovers the rider's rope -- which was cut almost halfway through before it broke, leaving the bronc free to throw him. The police come back to investigate the scene, and before long the chief suspect is also murdered in another "accident."

Jacob Willis, a trusted employee of a local businessman, pays money to a skid-row drifter who was blackmailing him. After Jacob leaves him the drifter is accidentally killed in a scuffle with two other hobos. One of them tells the police that Jacob killed the man. After talking to Jacob, Stone has doubts that he could be a killer, but then he finds out what the drifter knew about Jacob: that he escaped from an Alabama prison 25 years ago. Jacob believes he killed a guard during the escape, and thinks he must run away or face imprisonment. His employer's young son trusts Jacob and wants to run away with him.

Season 5, Episode 18: Once a Con

3 March 1977
The last episode to air before ABC turned over much of its Thursday night lineup to spring-tryout series ("Streets of San Francisco" was replaced by "Westside Medical," which lasted 13 weeks; "The Tony Randall Show" was replaced by "Three's Company") is a mystery set on a college campus. While waiting for a bus, a college coed who doubles as a model is slashed with a knife, and one wound goes straight to the heart. A convict at San Quentin, who's a student at the same college learning a trade for when he is released, is scheduled to board the same bus. Instead, he runs like hell. The convict is caught soon afterward and assumed to be the killer, but he doesn't seem to have a motive. Stone wonders if one of the woman's fellow students might have had a grudge against her.

Ah-nold, long before his movie stardom, made his TV-acting debut as a champion bodybuilder (which he was at the time) visiting San Francisco for a competition. Something (it's not made clear what) has made him incredibly buff and muscled, but has also left him extremely hypersensitive to criticism and with no control over his anger. When he shows off his poses for a young woman, he becomes enraged and unwittingly chokes her to death. He's taken in by a couple and entered into the bodybuilding contest, but broods when he finishes only second. Stone and company suspect him in the death of the woman, and fear he may kill again if provoked.
