How James Corden Conquered Late Night One 'Carpool Karaoke' at a Time

24 August 2016 7:00 AM, PDT | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

Matt Damon is running toward the rooftop railing of an L.A. building, and people are afraid he's gonna die. James Corden is not one of them. Damon is reprising Jason Bourne, walking fast and looking over the right shoulder of his scuffed brown leather jacket. He then runs into a plump Brit who's dressed exactly the same. Damon smiles. It's Corden, the host of CBS' The Late Late Show, and the proud son of Hazlemere, Buckinghamshire, in England's unfashionable Home Counties. It's an hour before the taping of Corden's show, »

Big Stars Love TV So Much, They’re Even Hosting Game Shows Now

2 July 2016 8:32 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Remember when big-name stars didn’t want to do TV? Now they’re even clamoring for jobs as game show hosts.

Alec Baldwin (ABC’s “Match Game”), Taye Diggs (Fox’s “Hypnotize Me”), Jane Lynch (NBC’s “Celebrity Game Night”) and Anthony Anderson (ABC’s “To Tell the Truth”) are just some of the actors who now front major primetime game shows, in addition to their regular scripted work.

“You look at game shows from the 1970s and 1980s, they were somewhat cheesy,” Anderson said. “It’s different now. It’s a lot classier. It’s cool.”

Wayne Brady, who has hosted a “Let’s Make a Deal” revival for CBS since 2009, joked that “being a game show host was very much akin to being a local affiliate weatherman – and no offense to local affiliate weathermen, but there’s a stereotype.”

Match Game vs. $100,000 Pyramid: Which ABC Reboot Is Most Faithful?

27 June 2016 8:03 AM, PDT | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

With this Sunday’s simultaneous launch of $100,000 Pyramid and Match Game, ABC has upped its retro game show reboot roster to a full four shows, if one lumps in (Celebrity) Family Feud with the recently premiered To Tell the Truth.

Celebrity Family Feud is now in its second season (and the “civilian” flavor has been in and out of syndicated TV), so there’s nothing much to discuss on that front — save for Kelli Pickler seemingly thinking the final round poses essay questions. Zoo: Bob Barker Upset with CBS Over Season Two

26 June 2016 11:56 AM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

Zoo will return to CBS for its second season on Tuesday, and there is some new controversy surrounding the series. Bob Barker penned a letter asking for CBS to stop the use of live animals on the series. Barker has long been an animal advocate, and he hosted The Price is Right for 35 years. Each day, he would end the show with a message about animals.

Barker said the following in his letter, according to Entertainment Weekly:

“As former host of the longest-running show on CBS, I am writing to you after hearing from my friends at PETA that your network continues to allow wild animals to be used on Zoo, despite learning that, when used for entertainment, big cats and other animals are torn away from their mothers, subjected to abusive training methods, and locked inside tiny cages. "I still love this life, doing both things," says Bill Maher, the 60-year-old veteran standup comedian and longtime host of HBO's talk show Real Time with Bill Maher, as we sit down in his bungalow at CBS Television City in La (where Real Time shares a set with The Price Is Right), to record an episode of the 'Awards Chatter' podcast. 15 years ago today: ‘Atlantis: The Lost Empire’ and ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’ premiered

15 June 2016 11:30 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

15 years ago today, Disney and Angelina Jolie both gave us new movies. It was on June 15, 2001 that Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider opened in theaters. The two films topped the box office that weekend, with Lara Croft holding the top spot. The Disney Renaissance had ended, and Atlantis didn’t live up to the quality of films the House of Mouse was putting out in the ’90s like Lion King and Beauty and the Beast. Atlantis didn’t get much praise from critics upon its release, and it hasn’t amassed as strong a fandom as films in the pantheon of Disney greats have. Though it does have a cult favorite status among Disney movies, and some critics praised it for being a unique departure from typical Disney animated features, with its sci-fi influences and look based on the visual style of Hellboy creator Mike Mignola. Lara Croft has remained a memorable item on Angelina Jolie’s resume — it’s the movie that really established her as a Hollywood star. At the time of its release, it was the highest-grossing video game adaptation. Another movie based on the Tomb Raider game series is set to star Ex Machina actress Alicia Vikander. Other notable June 15 happenings in pop culture history: • 1960: Billy Wilder’s The Apartment premiered. • 1963: The Sound of Music closed on Broadway after 1,443 performances. • 1966: Elvis Presley movie Paradise, Hawaiian Style opened in U.S. theaters. • 1983: The fifth and final season finale of Taxi aired. • 1988: Kevin Costner’s sports rom-com movie Bill Durham was released. • 1990: Dick Tracy opened in theaters. • 1994: The Lion King started playing in Los Angeles’ El Capitan Theatre and New York’s Radio City Music Hall, ahead of a wide release later that month. • 2005: Batman Begins opened in theaters. • 2007: Bob Barker hosted The Price is Right for the final time, ending his 35-year tenure on the show. • 2008: At the 62nd Tony Awards, In the Heights (from Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda) won Best Musical. »

Ratings: ‘The Voice’ Tops ‘Dancing With the Stars’ in Battle of Reality Show Finales

25 May 2016 9:25 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

In a battle of reality show finales, NBC’s “The Voice” got the best of ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” in key demos on Tuesday, with both shows down noticeably from last year and again paying the price of head-to-head combat.

Impacting the ratings for last night’s reality show finales was another strong delivery for the NBA Western Conference finals on TNT, with the Oklahoma City Thunder’s victory over the Golden State Warriors netting a 6.8 overnight household rating. This was the best NBA rating this postseason, edging out Game 1 of this series (6.7), which ended up averaging a 3.7 rating in adults 18-49 and 8.7 million total viewers.

Looking at Tuesday’s broadcast action, NBC’s “The Voice” averaged a 2.1 rating/7 share in adults 18-49 (likely to rise to a 2.2 in the finals) and 10.3 million viewers overall from 9 to 11 p.m., down more than 20% from last spring’s season-ender but »

Celebrating the UK adventure game TV show

Aaron Birch Jul 13, 2016

The Crystal Maze, Cyber Zone, Fort Boyard... We look back at the UK game shows that dared to ask more than just quiz questions...

If the idea of yet another TV game show with an uninspiring presenter and ever so slight spin on the tried and tested Q&A formula fills you with apathy, you're not alone. Although TV quiz shows often rake in the viewers for a relatively low production budget, hence their popularity with TV studios, the whole genre feels a little stagnant. Perhaps it's the rise of the Internet, a general change in viewer culture, and the changing tastes that come with it. While many shows of the past delighted audiences with images of shiny new appliances, cars, and holidays to far-off destinations, today's shows mostly award cold, hard, and boring cash. Great for the winner, but not too interesting for the viewer. Give »
