33 mil love last episode of 'Raymond'

17 May 2005 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Holy finale! Nearly 33 million fans turned out Monday to watch the Barone clan squeeze themselves around the kitchen table one last time in the swan-song episode of CBS' Everybody Loves Raymond. The 9 p.m. series finale of CBS' Raymond brought in the highest ratings of the series' nine-season run with an average of 32.9 million viewers and an 11.2 rating/26 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to Nielsen Media Research. That also amounted to CBS' largest audience on a Monday since 1994. As series finales go, the 1983 signoff of M*A*S*H still holds the all-time record with an average of 105 million viewers. NBC's Cheers exited in 1993 with 80.3 million viewers; this time last year, NBC's Friends bid farewell after 10 seasons with more than 52 million viewers for an hourlong episode. Raymond's coattails sent its 9:30 p.m. companion Two and a Half Men (24.2 million, 8.1/18) soaring to its best-ever numbers. The Raymond finale halo was powerful enough to carry CBS' The Late Show With David Letterman, whose guests included Raymond star Ray Romano, to its third-highest rated telecast of the season and an easy victory against NBC's The Tonight Show With Jay Leno (4.5/11). Late Show averaged a 5.5 household rating/13 share in Nielsen's 56 overnight markets, compared with Tonight Show's 4.5/11. »
