Esparza exits as CBS photographer

1 October 2004 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

After chronicling the star-studded history of CBS for the past five decades, Tony Esparza is retiring from his post today as the senior staff photographer at CBS Entertainment. During his 45-year career with CBS, Esparza has photographed everyone from Queen Elizabeth II to Lucille Ball, from Elvis Presley to Judy Garland to the casts of such landmark series as M*A*S*H, All in the Family, Dallas, Murphy Brown and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Esparza joined CBS' West Coast branch on Aug. 25, 1959, in a $62-a-week job as the assistant to the photo editor. It wasn't long before Esparza was working behind the camera himself. »

NBC perks up as 'Friends' ends

12 May 2004 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

NBC was the big winner the week of May 3, the one with the grand finale of the network's flagship comedy Friends. The hourlong farewell of the venerable sitcom drew 52.3 million viewers and a 24.9 rating/54 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, ranking it as NBC's highest-rated telecast since the May 1998 swan song of another cult Thursday comedy, Seinfeld, and the most-watched entertainment program on any network since Seinfeld's exit. On the all-time series finales list, which began with the 1983 signoff of CBS' M*A*S*H, Friends ranked fourth, behind M*A*S*H (105 million), NBC's Cheers (80.3 million) and Seinfeld (76.2 million). It also was the second-most-watched Friends episode ever, behind the hourlong post-Super Bowl episode (52.9 million) in 1996. »
