Cannes Film Review: ‘Blood Father’

21 May 2016 5:00 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

It’s silly to say that actors are the characters they play, but it’s naïve to say that they totally aren’t. That’s what has caused such a problem for Mel Gibson. He’s not the first celebrity to be sunk by bad behavior, but the lingering scandal is that it’s not just the things he said; it’s that everyone heard him on those leaked recordings — heard him screaming and roaring, heard his boiling rants of hatred. How can he go back to playing a movie star we like, pretending that he’s not…that guy? (Who’d believe it?) The answer is: He can do it, just maybe, by playing a movie star who is that guy.

That, more or less, is what he does in “Blood Father.” Directed by Jean-François Richet, who made the lumpy two-part “Mesrine” gangster saga, the picture is an obvious »

TV Review: DC's Legends of Tomorrow "Destiny"

13 May 2016 8:08 AM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Legends of Tomorrow has had a difficult time finding its footing throughout the season.  One of the disadvantages with this show compared to Arrow or The Flash is the lack of a direct source material for the writers to reference.  Never once in the DC comic realm has this combination of characters been put together, so this show really had to start from scratch.  The main struggle for the show has always been the balance of character arcs. Overall this episode compared to the rest of the season was one of the best.  If you were to look at some of the stronger episodes this season they all have a commonality of very little screen time for Kendra or Carter.  These two have been the toughest for writers to get the audience to care for.

The focus of the show has slowly gone away from both Hawkman and Hawkgirl being the key to stop Savage, »

Legends of Tomorrow Preview: Time to Seize Our Destiny

Recently, Legends of Tomorrow has been moving a lot faster than it usually does. It’s all been working out better for the show. But now, the show has a unique opportunity. With our Legends trapped in the cells of the Vanishing Point, Legends of Tomorrow has the opportunity to orchestrate a prison break. With Vandal Savage on the move, the legends have to quickly break out and take the waverider back. What’s stopping them? Chronos Is Back! Yes, my prediction seems to have been spot on. Mick really couldn’t be trusted. But he’s really back for different reasons. You see,

Jeff Nichols Talks ‘Midnight Special,’ Reducing Exposition, Faith, and Perfect Endings

16 March 2016 11:50 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

This week, Jeff Nichols releases his fourth film, Midnight Special, a sci-fi chase film that melds Starman- style meditations on human nature, car chases straight out of Vanishing Point, and Nichols’ own pet themes: the sacrifices made for family and impending fears about fatherhood.

Nichols’ sensibility as a director is a study in contradictions. He’s a fiercely personal filmmaker, yet the work values thematic complexity over sprawling narratives. And while he’s incredibly confident in his own visions (Shotgun Stories, Take Shelter, Mud), he’s just as likely to admit that he likes the unpredictability that emerges from muse Michael Shannon or idiosyncratic performers such as Matthew McConaughey or Jessica Chastain.

It’s not his ability to build characters so much as his abilities to build worlds that makes Nichols one of the best contemporary American directors. Nichols, an Arkansas-born filmmaker, writes stories that possess a deep sense of the south, »

Great Double Features I’Ve Seen #1: Smokey And The Bandit (1977) And Convoy (1978)

12 March 2016 11:50 AM, PST | Trailers from Hell | See recent Trailers from Hell news »

(This is the first in an occasional series in which I remember some of the best double features I’ve been lucky enough to see projected in a theater.)

The New Beverly Cinema, the oldest surviving revival theater in Los Angeles, has this week dished up a time-capsule glimpse into America’s popular obsession with Cb, or citizen’s band, radio and the largely mythological outlaw trucker culture through which it crackled. If you’re of a certain age (mine), and you ever cruised around town or down the highway jabbering to friends and strangers on an open channel frequency (I did—my handle was The Godfather!), given the opportunity I don’t see how you could possibly resist the chance to see the ultimate trucker-cb action-comedy pairing, Hal Needham’s Smokey and the Bandit and Sam Peckinpah’s Convoy. (I couldn’t!) As of this writing, the morning of »
