The Welshman who rocked Asian action cinema

4 May 2012 4:06 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Gareth Huw Evans' new film pits an elite Jakarta police unit against an entire towerblock of baddies. It's fast, violent and daring, like the best of the genre

If there's one word used to describe Asian cinema, it's usually "extreme". From South Korea we've had the hammer-wielding antics of Oldboy, whose star ate a live baby octopus, while from Japan we've had Takashi Miike's Ichi The Killer, in which a severed face hits a wall and slides down it – in one of the film's lighter moments. From Hong Kong comes pretty much anything with Jackie Chan in it, a martial artist who proudly boasts of having broken every bone in his 5ft 8" body. And now from Indonesia comes The Raid, an action extravaganza teeming with machete-twirling, gravity-defying psychos who slice, smash and crush anything that dares cross their path.

Set in the slums of Jakarta, The Raid stars Iko Uwais as Rama, »

Just as the warlocks of Quarth welcome you to the House of the Undying, so too do we welcome you to this week's "Game of Thrones" recap! Shadow babies are a thing of the past, blue-lipped magic-users lurk about in the distance, and the threat of fire rages everywhere. As always, Westeros remains a wicked and weird place to live, but a place we love visiting every week. Keep reading for this week's highlights!

The King Is Dead

The War of Five Kings is down a player. Renly Baratheon, youngest brother of late King Robert, has joined his elder stag in the great beyond, thanks to the powers of Melisandre's shadow baby, a ruthless but calculated move on warmongering Stannis' part. »

Essential Viewing for fans of ‘The Raid: Redemption’ – 15 Classic Martial Arts Films

5 April 2012 10:43 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Not long ago, Sound on Sight’s editor Ricky D emailed myself and fellow contributor Michael Ryan for the purpose of compiling some of our individual favourite martial arts pictures to celebrate The Raid‘s theatrical release across North American this Easter weekend. I would never consider myself to be a scholar of the genre, but it is true that I do tend to go back to martial arts films on a consistent basis when I have I craving for high-octane action. I think it has to do with the fact that what the performers pull off actually can be done if one practices long and hard enough. You can round-house kick someone in the face or brutally beat up a group of thugs with nunchucks but you could never levitate off the ground on bend metal with your mind, fun as it may be to watch movies in which characters perform those acts. »

Review: The Raid: Redemption

29 March 2012 8:00 AM, PDT | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

Every year there are films that receive a lot of hype. Sometimes these films live up to the hype and and sometimes they disappoint. I recently saw one of these highly hyped films, The Raid: Redemption, and let me say it right now this movie lives up every bit of the hype.

The Raid: Redemption received a great deal of attention at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival, and word quickly spread that this was a must-see film. A lot of us hoped that that The Raid: Redemption would be a last minute addition to Fantastic Fest 2011. But luck did not shine on our screens as Gareth Evans's Indonesian action film was unavailable from the studio. This simply added to its mystery. A lucky 1,200 filmgoers did get to see the movie at the Paramount during SXSW this year, spreading still more good buzz.

The Raid: Redemption tells a story of a police raid gone wrong. »

The Legend Of Bruce Lee

Stars: Danny Chan, Michelle Lang, Wang Luoyong, Luc Bendza, Mark Dacascos, Gary Daniels , Ray Park | Written by Qian Linsen, Zhang Jianguang | Directed by Lee Moon-ki

The Legend of Bruce Lee stars the Lee-lookalike Danny Chan as the titular star, alongside American actress Michelle Lang as Linda Lee. What’s notable about this particular telling of Lee’s life is that Lee’s daughter Shannon is credited as the executive producer, and as such it lends much-needed gravitas to this iteration of what is, by now, and oft-told tale.

Originally a 50 hour television series produced and broadcast by China’s CCTV, The Legend of Bruce Lee released in the UK by Revolver is an edited down a three-hour epic that takes a look a the life of the legendary martial arts star – concentrating mainly on his years in the Us before his movie career, and the »
