The film is based on Richard Alan Simmons' original story "Skin Game".The screenplay was written by Peter Stone who did not receive screen credit and requested that his name be taken off the credits because his screenplay was rewritten by a second writer, thereby altering the theme, the plot and, most important, the characters.

A 90-minute television movie entitled Sidekicks, directed by Burt Kennedy and based on the movie Skin Game, starring Larry Hagman as Quince Drew and Louis Gossett Jr. as Jason O'Rourke, was broadcast in March of 1974.Unlike the feature film, the TV movie was set after the Civil War.The TV movie was intended as a pilot for a proposed series that ultimately was not made.
