ma-cortes29 November 2017
Swashbuckling , action , romance and dueling in this adventure B-movie . Average story about a brave adventurer pirate in Tortilla/Maccaroni style financed by Carthago C.C and Duca Internationale productions . So-so Spanish/Italian co-production , made in Pasta/Chorizo style , filled with thrills , action and battle ships . This pirate movie was middlingly starred by Charles ,-Carlos- , Quiney ; being enough spectacular as well as moving adventure made in colorful style . A breathtaking sweep across the seven seas with valiant adventurers , violent mutineers , and duels to death . In XVIII century , 1798 , set in 'straits of Torres' between Australia and Nueva Guinea . The British Empire uses this location to deport prisoners and to promote the tough buccaneers to attack foreign possessions ; at the same time England impedes other nations the navigation and shipping . But disputes by looting between buccaneers and the Brits cause confrontation among them , then Pirates seek shelter at island of Horno under command the dashing Captain MacDonald and his band of pirates . As they assault all the ships sail throughout the nearly places including the English boats . Later on , MacDonald is pardoned by the Crown , being appointed as Colonel and Commandant of Island of Horno , full of fabulous pearls located underwater . But Captain Mallory (Stelvio Rosi as Stan Cooper) accuses to the inhabitants to no be payed the due taxes and he invades the island . It results in MacDonald and his hoodlums (Antonio Mayans , Pasquale Basile) are imprisoned by Captain Mallory . While , the governor (José Marco) orders to execute the condemned pirate , but his beautiful niece (Maria Pia Conte) schemes a plan to free him , but she is really a traitor along with Captain Mallory . MacDonald escapes , reunites forces and helps unfortunates , and he leads an uprising against the crown that will forever alter the balance of world power , foiling evil Governor . Captain MacDonald confronts corruption of wicked deputy (Mariano Vidal Molina at his evil best) assaulting his ship and other English boats . Meanwhile , the nasty Captain Mallory along with his troops take on the dashing hero MacDonald at his island . At the end takes place a attack on the governor palace and the ordinary final swordplay confrontation .

José Luis Merino's spectacular and glimmer adventure features impressive duels , elegant costuming , functional production design , loads of action and full swashbuckling . This is a limited budget film , but it has more budget than other Merino films . Duo starring is formed by Stelvio Rossi as a baddie British captain , and Charles Quiney as a dashing adventurer avenger who delivers peace and justice . They are at their most agile and deft style and perform their own stunts . This swashbuckler packs passable action sequences regularly staged with no much stylish and vitality , adventure , fights in Hill/Spencer style , romance , final dueling and being entertaining but average . There are some action sequences including the sea battles and the thrilling ending fencing on the beach between Charles Quiney and Stan Cooper in the climax of the film . This stirring pirate movie in Italian style is starred by Charles Quiney in Chorizo/Pasta ways ; being filled with action , adventure , thrills , intrigue , spectacular fighting and humor . Charles Quiney took a chance and jumped from Pasta Western as ¨More dollars for the McGregor¨, ¨Bullets over Dallas¨ or warlike action : "Hell Commandos" , ¨When heroes die¨ and Zorro/Sandokan movies as ¨Zorro De Monterrey¨, ¨Last adventure Zorro¨, ¨Tiger of Kyber¨ and here playing a Two-fisted pirate called MacDonald . Quiney relishes his adventurous identity , swashbuckling , swording , executing bounds and leaps and climbing and throughly enjoys himself . It was all downhill for Quiney after this , as he returned Canary Islands and with no work he terminated as a busker until his early death in 2007 at 69. In the movie appears usual support actors , as Spanish people as Mariano Vidal Molina , Antonio Mayans , María Dolores Tovar , José Marco and Italian people as Maria Pia Conte , and Pasquale Basile . But even the smallest characters are regularly represented . Shot by cameraman Emanuele Di Cola on Spanish locations in Canary Islands and Caribbean isles , including its wonderful beaches . Acceptable production design by the prolific designer Eduardo De la Torre Fuente . Pretty good musical score by the good professional Francesco De Massi .

The motion picture was decently directed by Jose Luis Merino , -though has a lot of flaws and gaps- under pseudonym Joseph Marvin , and screenplay by Merino himself , but resulted to be average . Merino is a skill and successfully craftsman . He often uses same main actors , such as Stelvio Rossi , Peter Lee Lawrence , George Hilton , Charles Quiney and similar support cast as Antonio Mayans , Pasquale Vasile , Mariano Vidal Molina , Luis Barboo . He has written/directed numerous films of all kinds of genres , such as Terror : Ivanna , The hanging woman ; Euro-spy : Colpo Sensazionale Al Servicio Del Sifar ; Chorizo/Spaghetti Western : More Dollars for the MacGregors , Frontera Sur , Réquiem for the gringo , Gatling gun , Seven ride to death , ; Wartime : Last Panzer battle , Hell commandos , A Bullet for Rommel , When heroes die ; Musical : Europa Canta , Aquellos Tiempos Del Cuple , and his most successful films are the fresh and diverting adventures : Tarzan and King Salomon's mines , Rebelion De Bucaneros , El Zorro De Monterrey , and Last adventure of Zorro.

Late entry in swashbuckling yarns has some new twists...
ccmiller149218 August 2007
Pirate and swashbuckling yarns rather ebbed in films during the 70's and 80's, but this late entry in the genre has some new twists... 1. The most handsome, heroic looking gent in the film, a Capt. Mallory is not the hero, he' the villain! 2. The most beautiful girl in the film is not the heroine; she's also a villain, being a greedy scheming bitch who will lure and betray anyone to secure wealth and position for herself. 3. The rather ordinary looking man is a former pirate chief MacDonald who has gone to England and won amnesty for his band of buccaneers, promising to reform them into peaceful colonial ways. He's the hero. What follows is an engaging tale of deceit and treachery as MacDonald faces ruin due to traitors who plot to overthrow him and seize the island whose waters contain valuable pearls. The film is marred by low budget effects (such as toy ships supposed to represent a sailing sequence) but manages nevertheless to produce excitement with an adventurous spirit. The best sequence is the duel between MacDonald and Mallory which spills over into the ocean with both of them alternately fiercely fighting each other and grabbing hold of each other for dear life to keep themselves from drowning! More length in this exciting sequence certainly would have been welcome and it redeems quite a few faults. All in all, a successful attempt at period swashbuckling that most pirate fans will enjoy.
