Appreciation

Not a film to watch if you want to be uplifted.

It starts depressingly & finishes as it starts – so not your average blockbusting Hollywood feel-good A-movie.

However, this is a beautifully-made film evoking the absolute desperation of day-to-day survival in a Siberian gulag as must have been experienced by the author (Solzhenitsyn).

No glitz, no frills, no special effects: I just hope Hollywood doesn't decide to remake it.

I think there is a DVD somewhere but I guess it'll take some finding.

I have a crumbly old recorded-from-TV VHS (complete with commercial breaks) which I watch occasionally when I need to reminded of human inhumanity. Not that I need to watch it that often, then.

Why on earth it's banned in Finland is anyone's guess.
