Samantha Zalaznick: Mad Men Recap: Soap Opera Digest(ed)

16 May 2012 7:35 AM, PDT | Aol TV. | See recent Aol TV. news »

Even the Devil drinks a Sno Ball and even Mad Men can get hit in the face. "Dark Shadows" just wasn't on its usual high level of awesomeness. It's titled after the 1966-1971 vampire daytime drama (weirdly coinciding with Tim Burton's movie remake released this weekend) that Megan's redhead friend Julia is auditioning for. Megan laughs at the script and mocks she hasn't seen a soap opera this bad and "isn't it supposed to be scary?" -- and that's how I feel about this episode. It was all soaped up with bloodthirsty rivalry, jealousy and fake crying -- and isn't it supposed to be scary? But we didn't really care. It was nothing new. How many times have we seen Pete get all puffed up and deflated, Don belittle his coworkers, Betty pick a petty fight, Joan pick up the pieces, Roger seduce an ex, pay people off and crack Jew jokes? »

Mad Men Recap: Feast or Famine

14 May 2012 4:57 AM, PDT | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

You wanted less Megan, and you got it — this week’s Thanksgiving-themed Mad Men was much more of an ensemble effort than most episodes this season, and it was stronger for it. Roger schemed, Peggy fumed, and Don yelled at his wife and daughter but reined it in quicker than he has in the past. That’s progress, right? Plus, Betty’s back, y’all, and she basically reenacted scenes from my dieting history throughout the episode. Let’s all give thanks for what happened in “Dark Shadows.”

TV Review: Mad Men 5.9, ‘Dark Shadows’

14 May 2012 12:55 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

(Warning: Significant spoilers ahead!)

“I’m thankful that I have everything I want, and that no one else has anything better.” Those are the final words spoken in tonight’s episode. Bonus points to you if you can guess who says them without having watched the episode. If you can’t, well, I’ll tell you at the end.

Tonight’s episode is called “Dark Shadows,” and lest you think that’s just a cute reference to the recently released (and apparently not very good), Tim Burton film, think again. It’s that, but it also, believe it or not, refers to the TV series that was airing at the time this show takes place. Oh, and also I’m sure there’s some subtle imagery about dark shadows gathering, yadda-yadda.

There was much that happened in this particular story, including Betty (January Jones) attempting to »

Trailer For The Trailer For The Expendables 2… Arriving On Thursday!!!

2 May 2012 5:27 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Here is the teaser for the new trailer for The Expendables 2, hosted with subtlety and quiet grace by Terry Crews OBE.

With the recent trend in teasers for full length trailers (Looper, Total Recall and something called Prometheus), the boys over at Lionsgate thought they’d have a laugh with the brilliant Terry Crews. And as the man says, you better start getting pumped. Although he says it with a little more panache.

The Expendables 2 stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Randy Couture, Liam Hemsworth, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris, Bruce Willis, Yu Nan, Scott Adkins, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Terry Wogan, Harry H. Corbett, Walter Matthau, Scrooge McDuck, Flea from The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Burt Ward, The Bloke Who Sang ‘If I Was A Rich Man’ From Fiddler On The Roof, The Cheeky Girls, Herbie, Dick & Dom, Former U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan, Philippa Forester and Sandy Toksvig. »

James Bond Retrospective: For Your Eyes Only (1981)

1 May 2012 3:23 PM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

To mark the 50th Anniversary of one of the most successful movie franchises of all time and with filming almost complete on James Bond’s 23rd official outing in Skyfall due for release later this year, I have been tasked with taking a retrospective look at the films that turned author Ian Fleming’s creation into one of the most recognised and iconic characters in film history.

Following on from Bond’s previous mission into outer space for Moonraker, which although it was a huge success at the box office provided some of the worst excesses of the series so far preferring a more humorous approach over the serious spy thrills of the early days in the character’s long history. The film had also proved to be a costly exercise requiring co-financing from the French wing of United Artists to cover the budget. Series producer Albert R. Broccoli wisely »

His band achieved worldwide success after the 2007 release of their debut album The Way of the Fist, and now Five Finger Death Punch frontman Ivan Moody has temporarily traded in his rock star status to become one of the featured carnies in Darren Lynn Bousman’s The Devil’s Carnival.

The film is currently touring North America as part of a Road Show experience for fans, but a few months ago Dread Central had the opportunity to head out to the set of The Devil’s Carnival and during our visit was able to catch up with acting newcomer Moody about his film debut and heard more about working on the project and whether or not he has any plans to return to acting in the future.

O'Donnell In Talks To Return To Broadway

22 March 2012 12:06 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Comedienne Rosie O'Donnell is bouncing back following the cancellation of her U.S. chat show - she's in talks to head to Broadway for Will Smith's upcoming revival of Annie.

The Rosie Show was recently axed by bosses at Oprah Winfrey's Own network after just one season, but the actress is refusing to dwell on the news and is now planning to return to the New York stage.

According to The Daily Beast, O'Donnell has met with show producers about taking on the part of Miss Hannigan in the forthcoming musical, which will star the Men In Black actor's daughter, Willow Smith, as the titular orphan.

O'Donnell took to Twitter.com earlier this week (begs19Mar12) to address her talk show's cancellation and reveal her next career move.

She tweeted, "That's showbiz and I am happy to have had the chance and now to be back home in ny - maybe broadway!"

If the funnywoman is cast in Annie, she will be no stranger to the role - she previously played the boozed-up headmaster of the orphanage in a cruise ship production of the hit musical for her R Family Vacations company.

Oscar-winning British actress-turned-screenwriter Emma Thompson has been hired to rework the classic Annie script, while rap superstar Jay-z is helping to score the production.

O'Donnell last appeared on Broadway in a 2004 revival of Fiddler on the Roof and she starred in the Off-Broadway play Love, Loss, and What I Wore in 2009. »

Rosie O'Donnell Headed To Broadway

21 March 2012 5:22 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Rosie O’Donnell is wasting no time finding her next job now that her Own Network talk show has been canned. I'm told the comedian is getting ready to return to Broadway, playing the iconic Miss Hannigan in the revival of "Annie."

"Ro loves Broadway and is super excited about playing the part,” a friend of Rosie’s tells me. “The paperwork hasn’t been signed yet but the negotiations are well under way. This is a great role that she will be able to sink her teeth into and will get her back to acting and performing live, which has always been her first love.”

Rosie is no stranger to The Great White Way. She starred in "Fiddler on the Roof" with Harvey Fierstein, played Rizzo in "Grease," headlined in "Seussical" and has even hosted the Tony Awards twice.

Film Review: ‘Footnote’ Deserves Prominence With Great Storytelling

16 March 2012 4:00 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Answering the question, “Where are all the great film thrillers about Talumdic Studies?,” the awesome film “Footnote” considers that very subject, pitting the always complicated relationship between a father and son against an treasured academic prize. Even though it sounds starchy, it actually had more verve than most spy movies.

Rating: 4.5/5.0

Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the recent Oscars (losing to “A Separation”), this Israeli work defines the country and its atmospheric landscape through the plot, which is another remarkable achievement. There is more cultural acumen to be gained from viewing this film than a hundred showings of “Fiddler on the Roof” (which also gets a sharp and funny poke in the story). The pacing and the style of director Joseph Cedar uplifts the whole narrative, he touches upon the humanity of the situation in a way that maintains the dignity in all of his marvelous characters. »

Post Oscar Thought: Grown Up Films – An Endangered Species?

28 February 2012 9:12 AM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

“When I was a child,” film reviewer Stephen Whitty wrote in “What Happened to Grown-Up Films?” for New Jersey’s state paper, The Star-Ledger, on the day of the Oscars, “most of the big hits in movie theaters were aimed at adults. Now that I’m an adult, most of the big hits in movie theaters are aimed at children.”

Earlier this month (“Why Can’t An Oscar-Winner Look More Like a Hit?” posted 2/8/12), several of us on this site were discussing what turns out to be the heart of Whitty’s article: the divergence between the acclaimed and the popular. With respect to my Sos colleagues, none of us put it quite as eloquently or made as substantial a case for the how’s and why’s behind that schism as Whitty does. His piece is worth a read and you can find it here.

Oscar Predictions: Best Score

22 February 2012 2:55 PM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

While two Oscar champs and a multiple nominee contend for Best Score, the frontrunner for the award is rookie contender Ludovic Bource who composed the music heard throughout "The Artist." He has already won over the Golden Globes, Critics' Choice Awards, and European Film Awards. No dialogue in the picture meant an even greater emphasis on the music.  John Williams was nominated for both "War Horse" and "The Adventures of Tintin" bringing his career total to 47 bids (that is 12 behind record holder Walt Disney). Three of his five Oscar wins were for other Steven Spielberg movies: "Jaws" (1975), "E.T. The Extraterrestrial" (1982), and "Schindler's List" (1993). His other two wins were for "Fiddler on the Roof" (1971) and "Star War" (1977).  Make Your Oscar Predictions: What Will Win Best Score?

Was the 1970s the best decade for the Best Picture Oscar?

21 February 2012 3:58 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

With the Oscars nearly here, Glen looks back to the 70s, and argues that it was the decade when the Academy got its Best Picture decisions consistently right...

It’s widely acknowledged that the 1970s was one of the best periods in American cinema. It’s little surprise, then, that the Academy Awards gave the Best Picture award to some of the best films during its 84 years. But as is often the case with the Oscars, the 70s wasn’t without its controversies, as a number of great films missed out on the award or even failed to be nominated. Even so, the run of Best Picture winners from 1970 to 1979 was incredibly strong.

The decade started with Midnight Cowboy scooping the Best Picture award at the 42nd Academy Awards on 7th April 1970, but as the film was released in May 1969 it doesn’t really count as an example of the »

'The Book of Mormon' wins a Grammy and cleans up Broadway box office

The Book of Mormon continues its clean-cut, white-shirted dominance of Broadway. Last night, the Tony-winning hit by Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and Robert Lopez picked up a Grammy Award for best musical theater album (during the untelevised portion of the ceremony). Backstage, Parker said that he was gratified by the overwhelmingly positive response to the show — including by Mormons: “For some, it’s like their Fiddler on the Roof.”

And after topping the Broadway box office charts for the first time last week, Mormon slipped to second behind perennial powerhouse Wicked for the week ending Feb. 12. While Wicked raked in $1.509 million, »

Directed by Oscar-nominated actress Piper Laurie ("Carrie") and produced by Lia and Dana Matthow, the limited run of the one-man show starring and written by actor Jim Brochu recreates the persona of funnyman actor 'Zero Mostel' ("The Producers"):

"...Jim Brochu brings Zero Mostel back to extraordinary life in 'Zero Hour', re-creating the definitive backstory to this amazing performer's appearances in 'Fiddler on the Roof', 'A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum' and Mel Brooks' 'The Producers'. Brochu is both hilarious and poignant as he recounts Mostel's big life - as a Broadway legend, a larger than life personality and the target of Hollywood blacklisting..."

With the 84th Academy Award nominations announced last week (and me finally coming up for air post-Sundance), I wanted to give the five Original Score (and two Original Song) nominees a closer look. Each nominated score is full-bodied and as varied as the films they are featured in ranging from fun (John Williams for The Adventures of Tin Tin) to lush (Ludovic Bource for The Artist) to dramatic (Howard Shore for Hugo) to tense (Alberto Iglesias for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) to emotional (John Williams for War Horse) while each of the nominated songs are quirky and catchy (Bret McKenzie’s “Man or Muppet” from The Muppets and Sergio Mendes, Carlinhos Brown and Siedah Garrett’s “Real In Rio” from Rio.) While I am not going to propose to understand why the Academy makes their choices the way they do (the lack of Drive and Shame nominations alone had me scratching my head last week) and I »

Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close – The Review

20 January 2012 6:06 AM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Two insufferable hours of sanctimonious Hollywood mush, Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close topped my “Ten Worst” of 2011 because it aimed so high and had so far to fall. It’s easy to dump on a lame comedy like Jack And Jill, but Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close, a self-important look at one boy’s experience with the 9-11 tragedy, is a picture obviously tailor-made for Academy Award consideration, but it’s a crass sap-a-thon (or sappy crapathon) that indulges to the hilt every obnoxious feel-good quality imaginable, a saccharine nightmare that you may find yourself trapped in should you not heed my warning: ….It’s simply the worst….movie…..ever!

Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close tells the story of 12-year-old Oskar Schell, whose father was killed in the 9-11 tragedy. Oskar’s Jewish jeweler dad (Tom Hanks) is shown in flashbacks trying to focus his socially-challenged son’s mind by sending him on scavenger hunts, »
