Distant memories of a highly entertaining, possibly underrated, film
18 January 2005 | by (Inverness-shire, United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

I recall seeing this movie more years ago than I care to remember; it was broadcast on British TV. At the time I was totally won over by the acting of Glen Ford and Dean Jagger. Glen Ford's depiction of growing fear and moral conflict carried the film perfectly, with Dean Jagger's sinister accent and forceful character beautifully portrayed. I have not seen this film since, and perhaps another viewing might lessen it's impact. One thing I am sure of, and that is that many a modern movie "maker" would be better abandoning his/her prop-reliant histrionic "verismo" in favour of what made this film, and many another from this era, impressive; namely, clarity of diction, non intrusive camera work and a storyline totally free from red herrings, false climaxes and bizarre stunts. To those movie lovers who have not seen this one, may I humbly recommend it.
