Author: Jon Lyus

With a name to ring a dozen Hollywood bells every time it’s spoken a new film from Sofia Coppola will always bring a measure of excitement. The last film she produced was the Netflix Holiday special A Very Murray Christmas, which she directed and co-wrote with Bill Murray and Mitch Glazer. Before that she stood in the eye of the Californian fame hurricane with 2013’s The Bling Ring, which followed the languid Somewhere from 2010. Today her new film, The Beguiled, had its first trailer revealed and we’re a million miles from Tinseltown.

The film was adapted by Coppola from Thomas Cullinan 1966’s novel A Painted Devil and Don Siegel’s own cinematic adaptation of the story in 1971 (a film which shares the name The Beguiled). The stage is set in 1863, during the American Civil War, at an all-girls boarding school in Mississippi. An injured Union »

We’ve already had one take on Thomas Cullinan’s novel, The Beguiled, on the big screen. That arrived in 1971, with Clint Eastwood in the lead, and it’s one of his most underappreciated movies.

#vengefulbitches forever

The teaser for Sofia Coppola's remake of The Beguiled (2017) is upon us and it is glorious if surprisingly faithful. In fact, if you watched the original 1971 movie with us during the last season of Hit Me With Your Best Shot you'll be hard pressed to spot many immediate differences beyond of course the new cast. Nicole Kidman takes the Geraldine Page role (we worship Kidman but good luck topping one of Page's juiciest star turns), Colin Farrell gets the Clint Eastwood wounded womanizing soldier part, Kiki steps in for Elizabeth Hartman, and Oona Laurence (who was so good opposite Gyllenhaal in Southpaw) plays the Pamela Ferdin role.

If you haven't yet seen the trailer or would like to watch it again (I'm on round 5) it's after the jump along with a short "Yes No Maybe So" »

Focus Features has unveiled the teaser trailer for Sofia Coppola's latest film, titled The Beguiled, adapted from Thomas Cullinan's Southern Gothic novel. Set during the Civil War, an injured Union soldier ends up being nursed back to life inside a girls' boarding school in the Confederate south. Colin Farrell plays the soldier, and the cast includes Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning, and Oona Laurence. While at first this seems like a simple love story, the twist is that the girls eventually turn on him, and there's that crazy funny line that Farrell shouts at the end of this trailer that is already being turned into a meme online. First Trailer For Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled Unveils A Period Drama With A Dark Twist

8 February 2017 12:55 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Barring the delightful festive treat known as A Very Murray Christmas, it’s going on four years since Sofia Coppola’s last creative effort, The Bling Ring, dazzled moviegoers on the big screen. But that doesn’t necessarily mean the writer-director hasn’t been keeping busy.

In between work on documentaries like The Family Whistle, Coppola has been quietly pulling together a modern remake of The Beguiled, a new, star-studded interpretation on the novel A Painted Devil by Thomas P. Cullinan. Indeed, Cullinan’s period yarn has graced the screen before; back in 1971, director Don SiegelClint Eastwood and Geraldine Page tackled the family drama, which largely takes place in rural Mississippi during the height of the American Civil War.

Sofia Coppola’s version of The Beguiled will dance to the same tune, only this time it is The Lobster‘s Colin Farrell on board to play wounded Union soldier, »

Coming Distractions: Colin Farrell meets some “vengeful bitches” in the trailer for Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled

The first trailer for Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled, a remake of the 1971 Don Siegel drama starring Clint Eastwood and Coppola’s first feature film since 2013’s The Bling Ring, has arrived. As expected, it’s thick with sensual atmosphere—we’d expect nothing less from Sofia Coppola—as Elle Fanning suggests that she and the rest of the students at a Southern girls’ boarding school during the Civil War show injured Union soldier Colin Farrell “some real Southern hospitality.” (Sex. She’s talking about sex.) The trailer also appears to be more faithful to the 19th-century period setting than Coppola has been in the past (Marie Antoinette, anyone?) lighting dim nighttime scenes with nothing but candlelight a la Barry Lyndon or The Witch.

The Beguiled co-stars Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst, and opens in select cities on June 23, with an expansion the following week.

First Trailer for Sofia Coppola’s ‘The Beguiled’ With Elle Fanning, Nicole Kidman, and Colin Farrell

8 February 2017 9:04 AM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

In most instances, a remake of Don Siegel’s beloved Clint Eastwood vehicle The Beguiled wouldn’t be well-advised, much less an awfully high-ranking entry on our most-anticipated of 2017 list. Then you see it’s helmed by Sofia Coppola and led by Colin FarrellElle Fanning, Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, and Angourie Rice (a recent stand-out in The Nice Guys), and you probably think, “Okay, yes, let’s get on with this.”

Coppola’s entry into the western genre — perhaps more a second adaptation of Thomas P. Cullinan’s A Painted Devil than journey into Siegel country — is hinted at with a first preview, which gives some glimpse of how she’ll be handling the juicy set-up: a Union solider becomes the object of affection for the girls and women of an all-female boarding school in the Antebellum South.
