Singing and acting, but not at the same time – Zeta-Jones falters on Broadway

14 December 2009 1:54 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Playing the daughter to Angela Lansbury's ancient mother, the Hollywood star is unconvincing as a rejected lover

Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music, directed by Trevor Nunn and the biggest opening in New York this season, is a tough gig for a Broadway debut, even for a movie star who won an Oscar for Chicago. With its complex score and no conventional showstoppers, it requires the skills of a seasoned stage actor. And while Catherine Zeta-Jones can act and sing, she can't do both at once in this production – at least not in one take.

The show is a musical interpretation of Ingmar Bergman's Smiles of a Summer Night, a tangle of love affairs and mistaken intentions set in Sweden at the turn of the last century. It is also a study of self-consciousness, which sadly for its star is not the same thing as being self-conscious. »

Doctor Who David Tennant takes over radio show and will sell off his bed

11 November 2009 8:58 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

When David Tennant filmed his last Doctor Who, he thought he might have seen the last of the Tardis.

But as he stepped in as a guest radio host today, he was "gobsmacked" to find himself in another dimension.

Staff at Absolute Radio - where he is co-presenting the Breakfast Show with Christian O'Connell - had transformed the studio into a time machine for his arrival.

Tennant, whose four-year tenure on the sci-fi hit series comes to an end in the new year, arrived at the radio station in central London this morning to find the front door painted blue and bearing a lit-up Police Box sign with a flashing blue light.

The actor said he was "gobsmacked, flattered and humbled" by the efforts to help him "settle in" but added: "I thought I'd seen the last of that b***** Tardis."

However, the star swiftly took claim of the show, »

DVD Playhouse—September 2009

By

Allen Gardner

The Human Condition (Criterion) Masaki Kobayashi’s epic (574 minutes) adaptation of Junpei Gomikawa’s six-volume novel was originally made and released as three separate films (1959-61), and is rightfully regarded as a landmark of Japanese cinema. Candide-like story of naïve, good-hearted Kaiji (Japanese superstar Tatsuya Nakadai) from labor camp supervisor, to Imperial Army solider, to Soviet Pow, and Kaiji’s struggle to maintain his humanity throughout. Unfolds with the mastery of a great novel, beautifully-shot, and a stunning example of cinematic mastery on the part of its makers. Four-disc set bonuses include: Interview with Kobayashi; Interview with Nakadai; Featurette; Trailer; Essay by critic Philip Kemp. Widescreen. Dolby 3.0 surround.

State Of Play (Universal) Russell Crowe stars as a veteran Washington D.C. political reporter investigating the murder of an aide to a rising congressional star (Ben Affleck), who also happens to be an old friend. »

[DVD Review] Bedknobs and Broomsticks

19 September 2009 | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

It's difficult to appreciate, or even accurately evaluate, a family film made about 40 years ago, especially when modern studios have made such sweeping advancements in the genre. Family movies can be good when they manage to do something innovative, when they transcend generations, appealing to both children and parents alike without pandering and without sacrificing quality by assuming their audience is made up of idiots, as countless kids' films are wont to do. The problem with Bedknobs and Broomsticks is that as it stands today, it doesn't really work for any audience, even when you do avoid juxtaposing it with the superior films of today.

Bedknobs and Broomsticks concerns an "apprentice witch" named Miss Price (Angela Lansbury) who is forced by government order to take in three kids. Orphaned kids, natch. Miss Price is at first cold and demanding towards the children, but they get the chance to retaliate when »

DVD Review: Delightful ‘Bedknobs and Broomsticks’ is Timeless

15 September 2009 11:33 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – When it was announced that Disney would be releasing a new special edition of “Bedknobs and Broomsticks,” the little kid in me woke up and started pounding on my memory banks. I have such vivid memories of watching the film as a child, mouth agape, eyes wide, and falling in love with the blend of animation and live-action that looked so revolutionary to this future critic’s young mind. Pick up the DVD and inspire a child you know.

DVD Rating: 3.5/5.0 “Bedknobs and Broomsticks” is a film so ingrained in the memory of my childhood that I can’t really approach it critically. It’s difficult to separate the personal meaning the film has for me on rainy Sundays around the Vcr with my mother and sister and look at it without bias. But I bet I’m not alone. And if you remember “Bedknobs” with the same fondness, »

Bedknobs and Broomsticks (Enchanted Musical Edition) - DVD Review

9 September 2009 9:01 AM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

.From the makers of Mary Poppins. is on the bottom cover of Bedknobs and Broomsticks. It.s not like you couldn.t tell that since it almost seems like a re-imagining of that film and shares some personnel. However, that doesn.t mean that B&B doesn.t cast its spell and turn into a very enjoyable film. It.s the 1940s and England is fighting the war with Nazi Germany. London is being blitzed from above. To protect the city.s children, they.re being sent to the countryside to live with surrogates until the bombs stop falling from the sky. Three London orphans, Charlie (Ian Weighill), Carrie (Cindy O.Callaghan), and Paul (Roy Snart), are housed with the spinster Eglantine Price (Angela Lansbury). »

DS Icon: Angela Lansbury

3 September 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

This week's Icon is one of the oldest troopers in showbiz. Angela Lansbury has been entertaining TV, theatre and movie audiences since the 1940s, most notably in Disney's Bedknobs and Broomsticks and Beauty and the Beast, and the 1962 classic The Manchurian Candidate. Quite bizarrely, she has looked the same age - approximately 97 - in every stage of her career. However, among her glittering and extensive life, one particular role has dominated/plagued/shined brightest. The show? Murder, She Wrote. The role? Jessica Fletcher. The sleuth drama is the longest-running TV murder mystery series and it still endures today with slacker students revelling in the predictable (more) »

DVD Review: Pete’s Dragon (High-Flying Edition)

27 August 2009 12:57 PM, PDT | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

Before Disney got in the habit of cranking out feature length animated musicals like “The Lion King,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “Beauty and the Beast,” the studio built up a reputation for creating musical films that blended live-action with animation. Many long-time Disney-film watchers will remember movies like “Bedknobs and Broomsticks” and, of course, “Mary Poppins.” “Pete’s Dragon” is one of the movies in that genre that never quite got the acclaim of “Mary Poppins” or “Bedknobs and Broomsticks.” It’s an “Oliver Twist” type story with an animated dragon that doesn’t talk. The plot focuses on Pete, an orphan with a habit for getting into trouble. The movie begins with Pete on the run from his a family of lowlifes who somehow own the “deed” to his life. He ends up in the town of Passamaquoddy, and is befriended by the loving family of Nora and her father Lampie. »
