"Ann and Eve" begins as a pure exploitation film with a brutal murder followed by Swedish Sex Bombs Gio Petre and Marie Liljedahl undressing and seducing men at every interval. Ann is worldly and hard while Eve is on the verge of marriage and wants a little "fun", which eventually becomes defined as a series of sleazy sexual encounters. After the first thirty minutes are over, however, the film embarks on a series of highly dramatic soliloquies, usually about war and death, and there are also two amusing yet artistic singing solos by a long-haired high-class Greek noblewoman/prostitute with a midget piano player, and finally a strange film trailer-within-a-film that reflects on Liljedahl's character in a most amusing and ironic way. We also get another murder and another strange sub-plot about a film critic who may or may not be dead by suicide, or simply murder by journalistic criticism.
Gio Petre is excellent in her role as Ann and her character truly grows and changes during the film's 105 minute running time, going from a harsh man-hater into a truly sympathetic character, while Marie Liljedahl gives a considerably better performance than she did in Jess Franco's "Eugenie" (1969), as this time her character's utter moral corruption is thoroughly enjoyed by her character. Heinz Hopf, from "Thriller: A Cruel Picture", also turns up in a pivotal yet almost dialog-free role. All three performers are veterans of Joe Sarno's Swedish-era films. The film is a tad overlong but is directed with such an original flair that the running time is more than tolerable.
Not tolerable, though, is the Something Weird video release referred to by the previous reviewer -- not only is this version cut by 15 minutes of crucial footage (running 89 minutes) but an entire reel of footage is out of order in this version, making it totally incoherent. The Japan DVD release, in English and letterboxed, is the one to see.
