In the end, the protagonist escapes some robots and climbs up a passage to the surface, deciding to face the radiation even if it kills him. - Sounds a lot like the plot for "THX-1138", but actually, it's "Hello Tomorrow", an episode of "Dimension X", a science fiction radio drama that aired from 1950 to 1951, when 'George Lucas' (I) was about 6 or 7 years old.
