David Janssen has Yaphet Kotto drive him to San Diego
19 January 2015 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

In Baltimore, David Janssen has shot his wife's lover, a football star for the Baltimore Colts. He hops a plane to L.A. but gets fogged in before he can fly to San Diego and then make Mexico. So he hires taxicab driver Yaphet Kotto to drive him there. After awhile, Janssen wields a gun. Janssen is no career criminal, but he's a threat. He's been shaken by discovering his wife of 10 years, mother of two beautiful children, was having an affair. He feels emptied out, dead. He's actually depressed. Being together in the closed cab, the two men develop a relationship. Kotto is trying to save Janssen from making matters worse or getting himself killed by police who are putting two and two together about their whereabouts. Janssen is not really thinking clearly and is a bit of a loose cannon. It's a series of conflicts and situations between these two, with Kotto not deserting Janssen after a few abortive tries.

This is a well done movie featuring two fine actors. It reminded me in spots of "Collateral" which has Tom Cruise as a hit man who is controlling the movements of his cab driver, Jamie Foxx. It reminded me a bit of Marshall Thompson in "Dial 1119" where he is disturbed and holds people hostage in a confined bar. "Night Chase" has quite a lot of action that gets them out of the cab and it develops the Janssen-Kotto relationship in some detail. The final sequence is set memorably in the San Diego Zoo.

This movie is a 70s style noir. The co-writer was Collier Young who wrote "Act of Violence", "Outrage", "Private Hell 36" and "The Hitch-Hiker". One can see that "Night Chase" has a parallel to "The Hitch-Hiker" in its use of a man in the back seat who is directing and threatening the driver. There the similarity ends, however, because Kotto knows that Janssen is no escaped convict but a betrayed man in conflict. He's taking flight. He has a plan, but he's also acting out of character and emotionally.
