The original Broadway production of "Lovers and Other Strangers", written by actors Renée Taylor and Joseph Bologna, opened on September 18, 1968, at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre and ran for seventy performances. Renée Taylor also performed in the stage play and wrote the screenplay with her husband Joseph Bologna.
The Oscar-winning song - "For All We Know" - from this movie was performed by Petula Clark at the Academy Awards (April 15, 1971) even though the song was a hit for The Carpenters. In fact, a small controversy occurred when the duo was not selected to perform the song at the ceremony, even though they were the one of the most popular music acts at the time.
The film features three Academy Award winners. Cloris Leachman, Gig Young and Diane Keaton earned Oscars during their careers. Additionally, Sylvester Stallone and Richard Castellano received Oscar nominations.
