"The Joys of Jezebel" is another sexploitation flick from the incredibly prolific producer David Friedman. The man has produced many campy exploitation classics (such as "The Defilers" and "The Toy Box"). This is definitely one of the lesser efforts I've seen from the man. It has all the trademarks associated with his productions. A period setting, cheap but elaborate sets, an occasionally surreal camp atmosphere, and gorgeous women making love to physically unappealing men all can be found here.
The film has a few good aspects. The women here are, as stated above, absolutely gorgeous, especially considering the standards in nudie films of the day. Christine Murray, who plays Jezebel, isn't a bad actress either. However, shes the only one who shows any degree of acting talent. The worst performer is also the best looking, the naive and annoyingly shrill Dixie Donovan as Rachel. The less said about the ugly men the better. The music score is pretty entertaining, including from bad beat-style poetry about the title character that resembles countless beatnik exploitation records from the 50s. The other music is a cool minimalist electronic score that seems to prefigure the kind of music associated with hardcore pornography nowadays. Also, even though I realize it was the main selling point of this film, the sex scenes go on for far too long. Only extreme addicts of Something Weird's brand of trash really need to check this one out. (3/10)
