The director had studied theology himself before making this film and the leading actor was a son of a priest. This was the first serious part for Ulf Pilgaard, who was building a career as a prolific stage comedian. Later he had other dramatic film roles, also executed with substantial vigor. The ambition was to create discussion about the position of the organized church in modern society, at the same time being about an existence as a philosophical person in a complex world. The priest must give up on the demands put upon him both from his congregation and himself. Within the Danish Christian Church the priest is employed by the state, yet he is not acting as a bureaucrat but has to take care of human psychological emotional conflicts. Reviewers, columnists and debaters were present in minor roles, and the ambition was high. Still, Henrik Stangerup had difficulty getting these themes working together in a balanced dramatic context. In the cinematography well performed by Henning Camre there are impressive symbolic scenes.
