Burbank International Film Festival Lineup in its 6th Year

18 August 2014 5:49 PM, PDT | Sydney's Buzz | See recent Sydney's Buzz news »

For those of you in the greater Los Angeles area who are not attending Toronto, here is a festival you can attend. The Burbank International Film Festival, whose mission is to promote up-and-coming filmmakers by providing a gateway to expand their careers in the entertainment industry, has a lineup which shines a light on the unknown talent of today, helping them become the celebrated filmmakers of tomorrow. Not only do we actively champion independent filmmaking, the festival is one of the few that offers film distribution seminars to help filmmakers guide their cinematic vision toward profitability.

Woodbury University has been behind the festival since its inception, and Biff is proud to have a continued relationship with the University.

Over 20 World Premieres are scheduled for the event held September 3-7 in Burbank, CA. Among the highlights are the world festival premiere of an all-star female version of Expendables-style film "Mercenaries," the festival Centerpiece Film and West Coast Premier of new the film directed by and starring Daniel Baldwin "The Wisdom To Know The Difference," along with screenings with look-a-likes welcomed, and the return of some classics to the big screen.

Many world premieres, as well as West Coast premieres take place under various umbrellas, with programs devoted to shorts, comedy, documentaries, new media, animation, international films, student films, films by women, faith-based films and sci-fi/horror.

Highlights include the world festival premier of "Mercenaries," a female action film in the style of The Expendables, with cast members Vivica A. Fox, Kristana Lokken, Brigitte Nielsen, Zoe Bell and Cynthia Rothrock; the West Coast premier of Daniel Baldwin's "The Wisdom to Know the Difference"; the sci-fi film "Stranger in the Pentagon" starring soap star Eileen Davidson (newest cast member of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills), and look-a-like events featuring attendees encouraged to dress respectively as mermaids ("The Little Mermaid" screening), robots ("Forbidden Planet" screening), Marilyn Monroe ("Bombshell" screening), Elvis Presley ("Elvis: That's the Way it is" screening).

Jeff Rector, head of the Festival, said "As the festival reaches its sixth and biggest year ever, we could not be more excited with this years line-up of films, red carpet events and after-parties. We are also grateful to our local studio neighbors Disney Pictures and Warner Bros. Home Video for the screenings of "The Little Mermaid" and "Forbidden Planet" as part of our "History of Cinema" program. It is this kind of support that makes Burbank the media capital of the world."

New on DVD Blu-ray August 12: 'Locke,' 'The Blacklist,' 'Bedknobs and Broomsticks'

11 August 2014 12:00 PM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Moviefone's Top DVD of the Week

"Locke"

What's It About? Tom Hardy stars as a construction foreman who's driving to London to attend the birth of his child. You really shouldn't have stressful conversations on your cell while driving, but Ivan (Hardy) doesn't care. He has to make sure his big job tomorrow goes as planned, confess to his wife that he cheated on her with a co-worker, and coaching the aforementioned co-worker through the premature birth of their baby. Yikes.

Why We're In: Hardy is more than capable of commanding the screen for the entirety of the movie. Although you hear other characters' voices, it's all Hardy, all the time. Who could argue with that?

Moviefone's Top Blu-ray of the Week

"Love Streams" (Criterion)

What's It About? John Cassavetes and real-life wife Gena Rowlands star as siblings who turn to each other for support after being left by everyone else in their lives. »
