"Darker Than Amber" is a very good introduction to Travis McGee, for anyone out there who doesn't know the hero of 21 "colourful" titled adventures.Rod Taylor made a perfect Travis and its a shame he didn't commit to a series as I'm sure if he had, it would have done so. As it was (is) this is the only movie made. Oh there was that other TV movie "The Empty Copper Sea"with Sam Elliott as a mustachioed, long-haired Trav but the only thing "Trav" about it was it was (is) a "Trav"esty! They even had Trav on a SAILBOAT! This movie has the right blend of action and tenderness, with good acting throughout. William Smith as Terry is a real menace. Smith said the fight scene at the end was done by him and Taylor and they really hurt each other. See Rod Taylor's website for more info on "Darker Than Amber" and Smith's comments. Very interesting.Color lensing on location in Florida and Nassau really captured the right atmosphere. They even had a houseboat and a Rolls Royce "Woody" Station Wagon. I guesss a Rolls pick-up would've been too much! Do I like Trav and "Darker Than Amber"? You bet!Cheers! Shields, Santa Barbara, CA. June 23, 2003
