Good film if you've never read your Farmer or Gardiner
3 July 2005 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

If you've never any books on the Civl War I suppose this would be a truly enjoyable film but for anyone who has its impossible to watch it without sitting pointing out historical inaccuracies for instance exchanging Staude for Cromwell in "The Incident" this was just shocking, and saying that Pymm died in 1646 when he died in 1643 just after the solemn league and covenant, also Oliver Cromwell jnr didn't die at Naseby but tied of Samllpox i think in 1643.

Also i accept that Cromwell was to the least a hothead but the shouting, God its awful.....constantly...Richard Harris plays him perfectly but god the shouting....i know he has to constantly shout but it get annoying. Alec Guiness is amazing as Charles, he's obviously researched the role well with his Scottish tinge in his voice and stutter.....although a bit of bow leggedness wouldn't go amiss (as Charles suffered from Ricketts as a child).

The film does have some nice small historical references like Essex taking his coffin into battle and the prayer that Cromwell says before Edgehill (although this was actually said by a Royalist captain).

Another inaccuracy that really riles me (ooh god i am sad I've noticed) is that Cromwell didn't single handedly train the NMA, and he certainly was not the Supreme Commander of the Parlimentary forces, this was Sir Thomas Fairfax.
