Forgotten comedy masterpiece, Italian style, 3 September 2008
10/10

This is an excellent comedy. It wasn't easy to track down, but it was well worth the effort. In fact, TENDERLY is a truly great movie. It's stylish, well acted and hilarious.

I'm a big fan of George Segal's work, particularly from 1965-75 (LOVING, BLUME IN LOVE, BYE BYE BRAVERMAN, THE TERMINAL MAN and California SPLIT all left me speechless), and I also enjoy director Franco Brusati's work (BREAD AND CHOCOLATE was exceptional). When I found out that Brusati and Segal worked together on an Italian comedy in '68, I had to see it. I found a bootleg DVD, which has decent quality, and watched it. A few days later I watched it again with my girlfriend, who introduced me to BREAD AND CHOCOLATE. She loved it. I showed it to a friend of mine who enjoys Segal's work. He flipped for it. It's that kind of movie.

It's basically a sex comedy, but it's tastefully done (for the most part). It also addresses then-contemporary social issues, particularly women's lib, as the central female character is a sexually liberated woman who takes many partners and has no qualms about it. Segal plays her best friend from childhood who has spent decades trying to get her to commit to him exclusively. The bulk of the film's comedy stems from Segal's frustration with the lady of his affections, but the film never condemns her for her freewheeling ways.

TENDERLY is a beautifully made, thoughtful and appropriately silly movie that fans of both George Segal and the Italian sex comedy movement can't afford to miss.
