Sir William Walker is called to the island of Queimada in the Antillies to foment a rebellion against Portuguese rule, to benefit British sugar traders. He successfully turns a local porter into a revolutionary, but must return ten years hence when the same man rebels against British rulers. The teacher then becomes the pupil, as he is taught the meaning of freedom by a man in chains.
