2012 Cannes Film Festival: That's a Wrap and Pictures from Around the City

The Palais des Festivals

Photo: RopeofSilicon.com Well, another year at the Cannes Film Festival comes to a close as I have seen my last film and am now flying back to sunny Seattle. All in all, I must say after three straight years attending the fest this was easily my most enjoyable. The films were diverse, challenging and, above all, excellent. Of course, not all of them can be gems, but in some cases even when I didn't necessarily like the film I still found plenty to discuss (see my review for Holy Motors). In total I saw 16 films from the festival over the course of nine days. I also saw Dr. No on the beach and screened footage from the Weinstein Co.'s upcoming films Django Unchained, The Master and The Silver Linings Playbook. It was also great to see many people around the festival that I never »

George Lazenby Upset About 007's New Tipple

23 May 2012 12:06 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

One-time James Bond George Lazenby has lashed out at moviemakers for trading 007's signature cocktail for beer in Skyfall, insisting they've broken a sacred tradition.

Earlier this year, film bosses announced that Daniel Craig would sip cold Heineken in the new Bond movie after signing a reported $45 million (GBP28 million) marketing deal with the Dutch beer company.

And now Lazenby, who played Bond in 1969 film On Her Majesty's Secret Service, has voiced his disapproval, insisting the superspy should always be a vodka Martini man .

Taking a shot at the movie bosses for abandoning long-standing tradition just to make a profit, he tells TMZ.com, "(Filmmakers) go where the money is".

And the Australian actor insists chiefs could have at least selected a better brew: "It's not the best beer out there, either." »

According to George Lazenby, some James Bond rites should remain sacred—like 007's love for vodka martinis. The actor who played the suave secret agent in 1969's On Her Majesty's Secret Service has lashed out at the reported $45 million product placement deal producers inked with Heineken that will find Bond swilling the Dutch beer instead of his signature drink in the forthcoming Skyfall. You might say he was shaken, not stirred, by the announcement. Talking to TMZ, Lazenby slammed the filmmakers' decision, saying it was regrettable to see them "go where the money is." "Skyfall" Wraps & New Blu-ray Details

23 May 2012 6:47 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Filming on "Skyfall", the much anticipated 23rd James Bond feature, wrapped this week in Turkey reports MI6. Daniel Craig reportedly finished his scenes this past Saturday and was spotted flying out to New York City on Sunday.

Second unit photography is still taking place this week in Adana in southern Turkey where scenes for the pre-titles sequence are being done. Shooting on the film began in early November, making "Skyfall" the longest shoot for a Bond feature since 1969's "On Her Majesty's Secret Service".

One good bit of news is all that work should show up on screen. Most Bond features clock in at a little over two hours, but the previous entry "Quantum of Solace" was an exception as it ran for just 106 minutes. Now, producer Michael G. Wilson appeared on BBC Breakfast and said don't expect such shortcutting this time - "It'll probably be longer, although we really »

Former James Bond Not Happy With Heineken

23 May 2012 6:18 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

James Bond's Heineken deal is not kosher for all former James Bonds.

In "Skyfall," the 23rd Bond film, the suave MI6 agent will forgo his usual shaken martini in favor of the classic Dutch beer. The deal -- which netted the production a reported $45 million -- caused much consternation from Bond fans when it was announced, and now George Lazenby has come out against it as well.

Lazenby, who played Bond in the 1969 film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service," reportedly told TMZ that the deal was bad for many reasons, not the least being that Heineken isn't "the best beer out there."

He also added that the Bond filmmakers "go where the money is," something that current Bond star Daniel Craig would likely agree with.

"We have relationships with a number of companies so that we can make this movie," Craig told Moviefone when asked about the Heineken deal. "The simple fact is that, »

First Look: 'Skyfall' Teaser Trailer

21 May 2012 1:36 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

James Bond fans have been given their first glimpse of the highly anticipated new 007 film, Skyfall - you can watch it above.

The trailer will raise even more questions as to where this takes Bond, as it shows Daniel Craig in an interrogation room, but he's the one fielding the questions from another agent, while M (Judi Dench) and another officer (Ralph Fiennes) observe.

And we hear, enigmatically, that the mention of 'Skyfall' - whatever that is - is what sends Bond out of the room, saying he's "done".

During the clip, we also see 007 stare at a row of coffins with Union Jacks, presumably his lost colleagues, M staring reflectively out over a valley, a fall from a very high building, and 007 with fire behind him, as well as the seductive bulbs of Turkish mosques. It's all very dystopian.

Finally, we hear from 007 again - that "some »

2012 Cannes Film Festival Preview: Part 1 - Notable Titles

I have scheduled this first part of my Cannes 2012 Preview to publish while I am somewhere over the middle of the United States, on my way to New York where I will connect with a flight heading into Nice. I'll be arriving in Cannes some time around 1 Pm Cet and my third straight journey to the Cannes Film Festival will begin, an experience that has easily become the #1 highlight of my year when it comes to covering movies. As hard as I have to work to cover the festival each year, it is absolutely worth it and based on the selection this year it looks like it will be just as fascinating. To begin, the festival runs from May 16-27, but I will only be in town through the morning of the 24th. As a result, two films that probably would have made my top ten most anticipated movies list won't, »

James Bond arrives at Cannes after 50 years

10 May 2012 8:45 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The new Bond movie is still in post-production, but celebrations of 50 years of Eon Bond films include screenings on the beach

The glitz and glamour of the Croisette seems like the natural habitat for a suave super-sleuth with expensive tastes, so it may come as some surprise that 007 is to visit the Cannes film festival for the first time later this month.

Eon Productions will not be debuting the new James Bond film, Skyfall, on the French riviera, however. Sam Mendes' movie, which arrives in cinemas on 26 October in the UK and on 9 November in the Us, is still in post-production. Instead, in the year of the 50th anniversary of the Eon 007 films, they will screen five of the best-known Bond entries on the Cannes beach, including the series debut Dr No, which was released in 1962. The other films, being shown as part of the Cinema de la Plage screenings, »

Tom Jones: 'I was up for James Bond'

Singer claims he lost out to Sean Connery because he was 'too well known' to play the secret agent

Tom Jones was almost offered the role of James Bond, he has revealed. The singer claims he was once under consideration to play the secret agent, until it was decided he was too famous.

Jones made the revelation in a recent interview with the Radio Times, after he was asked about his regrets. "The only thing I regret is that I'd like to have had a pop at acting when I was younger," he said. "My name was up for James Bond at one time, but [producer] Cubby Broccoli apparently said I was too well known for people to believe it."

Albert "Cubby" Broccoli, who died in 1996, launched the Bond film franchise in 1962. He produced the next 16 movies, including 1965's Thunderball, for which Jones wrote the title song. With the exception of »

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the James Bond franchise, one of the longest-running and most successful film series of all time. Four years after "Quantum Of Solace," Daniel Craig is returning as 007 in "Skyfall," arguably the most prestigious entry yet with Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes at the helm, a top-notch creative team behind him, and a cast that includes heavyweights like Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney, Ben Whishaw and Naomie Harris, among others. But so far, the film's secrets have remained relatively locked up.

But with the film's trailer set to debut in a month, paired with the release of "Men In Black 3," some more info has started to leak out, with Bond the cover star of the latest issue of Empire Magazine, who've been on the set of the movie. James Bond villains harm nuclear power's public image, says scientist

Royal Society of Chemistry president says evil characters' hidden reactors have contributed to negative perceptions

He may have been On Her Majesty's Secret Service, but James Bond and the power-hungry villains he saved the world from did no service to the image of nuclear power, a leading scientist has claimed.

The film version of Dr No, first screened 50 years ago and still a TV favourite, and other Bond movies have helped frame public perceptions of the hazards of nuclear power along with accidents such as Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima, according to David Phillips, president of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

He feared the portrait of the evil megalomaniac and his nuclear reactor hidden away on a Caribbean island contributed to the "entirely negative" and "remorselessly grim" perception of the industry as a force for evil.

Phillips told the BBC that when nuclear power was discussed "it is not »

MGM is polishing off the James Bond Blu-ray collection of nine missing films in one swift stroke by including all of them, along with the previously released 13 films, in the Bond 50 Blu-ray box set to celebrate the 50th anniversary of 007.

The collection box set will feature all 22 James Bond films in one tidy package. Over 130 hours of bonus features will be spread between the films, along with some new as-of-yet detailed exclusive content.

At this time there is no indication MGM is releasing the nine Bond films previously unavailable on Blu-ray as individual releases. Those films are Goldeneye, Octopussy, The Spy Who Loved Me, You Only Live Twice, The Living Daylights, Tomorrow Never Dies, Diamonds are Forever, A View to a Kill and On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

MGM isn't offering a release date for the Bond 50 Blu-ray set just yet other than to confirm it is coming this year. »
