Scott Reviews Robert Altman’s That Cold Day in the Park [Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Review]

27 February 2017 6:10 PM, PST | CriterionCast | See recent CriterionCast news »

Robert Altman builds his films like dystopian prisons, convincing his residents they have the run of the place while working to ensure they can’t escape. When he actually buckles down for a psychological thriller (3 Women) or locked-room drama (Come Back to the Five and Dime, Secret Honor), any departure from the comedic tone we usually expect from him is balanced by a psychological continuity. His films consistently show that you can never really run away from your problems, and you’re inevitably due to return to them.

That Cold Day in the Park opens in a city so generic, I took the English-accented cast at face value and assumed we were somewhere in the U.K. Here, in a well-appointed apartment, lives Frances (Sandy Dennis), so entombed in the memory of her deceased parents that all her friends (and would-be suitors) are twice her age. She entertains them and »

Peter Fonda back in leathers for Coen Brothers Mercedes-amg Gt Super Bowl commercial

5 February 2017 3:20 PM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Peter Fonda steps back into his leathers in the 2017 Super Bowl commercial for the Mercedes-amg Gt Roadster — in a spot titled Easy Driver and directed by The Coen Brothers. But this time the Easy Rider legend isn’t on a bike — but rather at the wheel of the Mercedes sports car. The commercial starts with a scene inside a roadside bar full of burly bikers fighting each other and generally doing that thing that bikers do (at least on film). But everything comes to a standstill when one of the bikers comes in and tells the others their bikes...read more »

Super Bowl Commercials: Peter Fonda Gears Up for Mercedes-Benz on Game Day

3 February 2017 7:35 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Members of a younger generation who take in a new Super Bowl commercial from Mercedes-Benz this Sunday might get a lesson in the popularity of the seminal film “Easy Rider.” Peter Fonda doesn’t mind.

“Columbia maintains it only made like $20 million, but I’ve been cashing the checks, so I know how much it made,” the actor joked in a recent interview.  When he appears in the Mercedes ad evoking the “Captain America” character he played in the 1969 movie, he thinks it will whet appetites for the film’s 50th anniversary, which will take place in 2019.

Fonda says he was excited to get an invite to appear in the commercial, which is directed by the famous director-producers Joel and Ethan Coen. The ad has quite a tableau: a biker bar called Tiny’s filled with bikers dressed to the very last detail. One stout fellow has the visage of Fonda’s movie character etched upon his »

Super Bowl Ad Review: Coen Brothers Try to Rev Audiences for Mercedes

30 January 2017 11:45 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Joel and Ethan Coen have lured moviegoers to films ranging from “The Big Lebowski” to “No Country for Old Men.” Can they now direct football fans to blow tens of thousands of dollars on a new Mercedes?

That will be the challenge come Sunday, when a 30-second ad will air during Super Bowl Li featuring Peter Fonda, the auto manufacturer’s slick Amg roadster, and a gang of burly bikers listening to Steppenwolf’s “Born to be Wild.” The question, of course, will be if the Coens can make the kind of art that leads to commerce.

Based on the teaser made available online – a 60-second behemoth that will no doubt be ill-served by the editor’s knife when it is cut down to half that length – the answer may be “No.”  After spending time with the colorful denizens of the tavern (it’s called “Tiny’s,” by the way) it’s hard to figure out why »

The bikers in this bar, however, don’t exactly exude the same cool as Fonda and Hopper did nearly 50 years ago. Eventually, a younger patron barges in and »

After directing one of the best films of last year and before they head to television for the first time, Joel and Ethan Coen will be seen during the Super Bowl. Well, maybe not on screen, but they’ve directed an ad for Mercedes, which clocks in at over a minute aka a cost of around $10 million for the company.

Highlighting the Mercedes-amg Gt Roadster, it features none other than Peter Fonda in an Easy Rider nod, as well as Steppenwolf‘s Born to be Wild. As with any other Coen production, all of these characters could probably lead their own film. Check it out below ahead of the Super Bowl next weekend.

Jack Nicholson ‘Basically Retired,’ According to Good Friend Peter Fonda

19 January 2017 7:09 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Jack Nicholson will turn 80 this spring, and though the last movie he did came out in 2010, he has never officially retired. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t retired, according to Peter Fonda, with whom Nicholson has been close since the two made “Easy Rider.”

“I think he is basically retired,” Fonda told Page Six at this month’s BAFTA Awards Season Tea Party, held annually in Los Angeles. “I don’t want to speak for him, but he has done a lot of work and he has done very well as a person financially.”

Four years ago, rumors circulated that the actor was slowing down due to memory loss, but those claims were swiftly denied by his representatives. “Sometimes people have a reason that you don’t know, and it’s not for me to ask,” said Fonda. »

Has Jack Nicholson Officially Retired After 60 Years in Hollywood?

18 January 2017 3:40 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Back in 2010, three-time Oscar-winning actor Jack Nicholson starred in two movies, playing himself in the faux documentary I'm Still Here, and the failing businessman and father Charles Madison in How Do You Know. Unfortunately for fans of the legendary icon, those were his last two movies, and there have been rumors in the past that he was retired from acting, with one report from 2013 claiming the actor was suffering from memory loss, although the actor's reps shot down that report, claiming that he is looking at scripts and trying to figure out what his next project may be. It's been more than three years since that report surfaced, and we haven't heard about any new Jack Nicholson project. But now one of the actor's closest friends believes he has actually retired.

The Sun caught up with Peter Fonda, who starred alongside Jack Nicholson in the 1969 classic Easy Rider, and has »
