It Came From The Tube: How Awful About Allan (1970)

23 July 2017 8:59 AM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

If anyone wrote the book on complicated parental relations, it’s Anthony Perkins. While Mother is nowhere to be found, this time around Tony is having Daddy issues in How Awful About Allan (1970), an effective, low key TV thriller directed by Curtis Harrington (The Dead Don’t Die). As long as you can leave Norman up in his room, you should have a good time.

Originally airing as an ABC Movie of the Week (because of course) on Tuesday, September 22nd, Allan had to contend with Hee Haw/All in the Family on CBS and the NBC Tuesday Night at the Movies. At the time however, ABC had this format on lockdown with audiences, and for good reason – they always brought in top shelf talent to display on the small screen, and How Awful About Allan is certainly no exception.

It Came From The Tube: Crowhaven Farm (1970)

21 May 2017 9:19 AM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

The cultural impact of satanic megahit Rosemary’s Baby (1968) was substantial and immediate. All of a sudden supernatural horror was in vogue, whether directly mentioning the Big S or delving into covens and cults. Somehow if money was to be made, Lucifer would be there with his asbestos lined suitcase ready to take donations from one and all. Which brings us to the small screen’s Crowhaven Farm (1970), an ABC Movie of the Week that terrified TV audiences with the knowledge that not all evil has to be metropolitan.

Originally airing on Tuesday, November 24th, Crowhaven Farm’s closest competition was CBS’s Hee Haw, but even those yokels couldn’t beat ABC’s juggernaut, which always won its time slot. And while it may not be a match for Rosemary’s devilish wit and urbane horror (not much is), Crowhaven Farm still offers plenty of spooky, countrified atmosphere.

What We Learned from 'American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story'

18 April 2017 6:56 AM, PDT | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story, the new 10-part docuseries on Amazon Prime, asks us to imagine its subject as the Don Draper of gentlemen's magazines. From humble origins, Hefner ascends the hierarchy of mid-century media, aided by a potent alchemy of ambition and chiseled instinct. He is – for the most part – amoral, though not without specific convictions. Stirred by Alfred Kinsey's seismic 1948 report, Sexual Behavior in the Human Male, he determined in his junior year of college that sexual taboos were not merely hypocritical, but fundamentally damaging. Alan Jackson on His Entry into the Country Music Hall of Fame: ‘To Be in Here, It’s Just Amazing’

5 April 2017 2:50 PM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

With one of the most celebrated careers in the history of country music, Alan Jackson is often asked if he still has anything left to accomplish. Until now, he hasn’t dared to speak his heart’s desire.

“I never say the Country Music Hall of Fame because I just felt like that was kind of pretentious, you know, to think that I deserve to be in there,” he said, standing in the Hall of Fame Rotunda in Nashville. “I never say that. But now I can say this is about the last dream on the list right here.”

It Came From The Tube: Night Slaves (1970)

29 January 2017 12:44 PM, PST | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

The Twilight Zone series stands as the benchmark for weird, wonderful, and creepy TV viewing. Many shows and movies have tried to duplicate its moralistic mysteries with varying results. Night Slaves is a charmingly odd TV movie not only cut from the same cloth, but with ties to it as well.

Originally airing as an ABC Movie of the Week on Tuesday, September 29th, Night Slaves duked it out with Hee Haw/To Rome with Love on CBS and the NBC Tuesday Night at the Movies and had no issues with either; the telefilm, while heading down that sci-fi road, managed to lacquer a few coats of soapy romance on as well, hitting all of the prime time sweet spots.

Let’s peruse our TV Guide and see what’s going on:

Network Aimed at Rural America Speaks for Population That Feels Underserved by the Media

19 January 2017 10:40 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

For anyone who wanted to get a handle on the mood among voters in rural America leading up to the presidential election, there was an obvious metric to consult: the price of soybeans. And cattle, corn, hogs, milk, and the other staples that drive the agricultural futures markets. Prices in the past few years have been down across the board. That spelled big trouble for the incumbent party in the White House.

Patrick Gottsch, founder and president of rural-lifestyle and agribusiness-focused cable channel Rfd-tv, saw the revolt against the political status quo coming more than a year ago. So did Donald Trump’s campaign managers. In the final two weeks before Election Day, Trump’s team spent $150,000 to buy every available advertising spot on Nashville-based Rfd-tv. His rival, Hillary Clinton, spent no money on the channel, according to Gottsch.

“You could really see it turning in the last couple of weeks,” Gottsch »

Sam Lovullo, Longtime Producer of 'Hee Haw,' Dies at 88

5 January 2017 4:10 PM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter - TV News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - TV News news »

Sam Lovullo, the longtime producer and driving force behind the enduring country music variety show Hee Haw, died Tuesday at his home in Encino, publicist Sandy Brokaw announced. He was 88.

Lovullo was working as an associate producer on a CBS variety show hosted by Jonathan Winters when he and his staff came upon the idea for Hee Haw.

“We discovered that the show was not rating well, particularly in the South. His comedy just wasn’t their style. In order to pick up some ratings points, we started to book some country artists,” Lovullo recalled in a 1996 interview »
