I remember

I was a young man and camera operator on this show. Her music was augmented by one of the finest contract bands in Hollywood and her show band was a large one. Nothing beats the sound of a LIVE band and Della doing her good thing. All the comments that I have read here are correct. We taped this show five days a week and each morning started with some good coffee and a smile and greeting from Della to the crew.It was a wonderful show and Della is really overflowing with talent. She was a friend to all of us on her crew and I will never forget this time in my life, especially since I married the producers secretary and we still talk of our fun times with this show and our wonderful Della.

Back in the mid-70's, I worked at "Long Island's (NY) First Commercial Television station," WSNL-TV, and in the last six months or so of its existence (1973-1975), it offered what I remember as the Della Reese Show.

As I recall, Della sang a song after the opening introduction, then retired to a typical talk show set and interviewed her guests. It was obvious that the shows were reruns since timely topics were never discussed. I recall that I found her a bit loud and irritating. Perhaps it was because it was aired at 10 a.m. and I wasn't really awake yet. I much preferred the style of Phil Donahue's Chicago-based show.

The only other thing I remember was that one of her guests was Steve Martin in his banjo-toting stand-up days. He was quite unique at the time.

Does anyone recall seeing this ground breaking show?

This show was quite a ground breaking event in 1969! As I understand, it was the first prime time talk show in the USA to have a African American host, of course in the form of the incredible lady known as Della Reese! Also as I understand the show was not carried in several TV markets in the south because of bigotry in programming choices. My understanding is that the show may also have been eventually syndicated into the 1970 season as well. As a footnote, Della Reese is far more than the star of a show called "Touched By an Angel", she's also one helluva Grammy nominated singer who has had a remarkable career with a least 20 or more albums to her credit thus far!! You should hear some of these fine albums for yourself to believe! I was not around back when this show was on, so I wonder if any of you remember the show. I heard it was quite good, but what else would you expect from such a survivor like Della Reese?!!

I Remember "Della"

I was about seventeen years old when this show aired. Yeah, it's been a long time. I am a Black woman and I was so excited that this elegant lady whose voice I loved (ever hear her perform "Don't You Know?") had her own television show. Unfortunately, I don't remember much about it except that Ms Reese was beautiful and wore magnificent clothes and killer hairstyles. The format, as I recall, involved having guests who performed and were, at some point, interviewed by Ms Reese. I am impressed and pleased that her career has spanned so many decades and that she's still going strong. This woman is deeply involved in her faith, is a minister and has a clothing line she's promoting on one of the shopping networks. Sorry I couldn't provide more information about the show, but it's good to be able to say that I remember it.

I used to watch this show with my Mom when she'd let me stay up late. Della Reese was quite impressive as a talk show host. Her singing was beyond compare. Her side-kick was the comedian Sandy Baron. They had a segment of the show called "improvs", sort of like "Who's line is it anyway".
